The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s used nuclear fuel inside a deep geological repository, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.
- Founded in 2002, the NWMO has been guided for 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Keepers that are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. Canada’s plan will only proceed in an area with informed and willing hosts, where the municipality, First Nation and Métis communities, and others in the area are working together to implement it. The NWMO plans to select a site in 2024, and two areas remain in our site selection process: the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation-Ignace area in northwestern Ontario and the Saugeen Ojibway Nation-South Bruce area in southern Ontario.
- Development Student - Environmental Technician
- One (1) position available
- Employment Period: Summer Term: 4 months (May 2024 - August 2024)
- Position Location: Based out of our one of our community offices in Ignace or South Bruce (Teeswater).
- Job Summary: We are currently seeking an enthusiastic Developmental Student - Environmental Technician for the summer 2023 term. Reporting to the Section Manager, Environmental Assessment, the student will be responsible for assisting field staff in data collection, compliance inspections and to contribute to data review/entry and QA/QC checks.
- Program Eligibility:

- Students must be returning full-time to their program at their university following the completion of their work term or be full-time students requiring the work term or co-op placement to graduate.
- Must be eligible to work in Canada and must be able to meet security clearance requirements.

**Responsibilities**:

- Assist field staff during monitoring initiatives.
- Review and becoming familiar with environmental sampling protocols.
- Review and comment on reports submitted by environmental monitoring consultants.
- Participate in compliance checks for environmental consultants.
- Assist in sample collection and data management.
- Participate in data collection as a potential community stakeholder.
- Participate in community engagement events.
- Review and quality assure field investigation data, GIS data, external data to ensure compliance with NWMO’S Quality Assurance Protocols.
- Contribute to reduction in data backlog to meet deadline of EDMS implementation.

Qualifications and Experience
- Student must be enrolled in a post-secondary natural science program such as environmental science, biology, geoscience, or engineering etc.
- Must have strong, existing personal or professional networks within the Ignace region, and understanding of local opportunities and challenges related to community development.
- Demonstrated oral communication skills including presentation skills.
- Highly organized and a demonstrated ability to work independently as well as work within a team.
- Excellent writing skills including producing reports.
- Strong research skills
- Valid driver’s license.
- Must be willing and able to work outdoors in inclement weather, and on uneven terrain.
- Knowledge of the local natural environment is considered an asset.
- Must be available for occasional evening and weekend work, as required.
- GIS skills are considered an asset.
- A commitment to safety and continuous learning and improvement.

Other Information

Work Hours:
Students must be available to work full-time, 35 hours per week during core business hours 8:30 am - 5 pm.

Community Offices: Student positions report on-site. This role will require frequent travel.
