**Highlights of this opportunity**:
As a valued member of UNYA’s Counselling team, the Family Mediation Counsellor plays a vital role in supporting Indigenous youth aged 12-18 and their families. Family mediation is a collaborative and supportive process designed to help parents and youth resolve conflicts in a voluntary, non-adversarial environment. The Mediation Counsellor works closely with families to address specific challenges, build communication and problem-solving skills, and create mutually agreed-upon solutions. When needed, the reunification process is thoughtfully planned to help reconnect youth in out-of-home care with their families in a way that feels safe and supported.

Each youth and family referred to the service will have a personalized, flexible, and integrated service plan, developed collaboratively with the youth, their family, and other professionals, community service providers, or community members as needed. By taking a youth-directed, culturally grounded approach, the Family Mediation Counsellor tailors’ therapeutic practices to the unique needs and strengths of each family.

Services focus on:

- Supporting youth and families in identifying their short
- and long-term needs and developing plans to address them.
- Reducing high levels of risk to youth’s health and safety.
- Meeting youth’s immediate basic needs, including shelter, food, and clothing.
- Establishing connections with community resources to address needs such as physical health, mental health, substance use, and/or sexual exploitation.
- Improving youth’s connections to positive community supports, including family/extended family, peers, education, employment, and housing.
- Helping youth acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to keep themselves safe, achieve their goals, and successfully transition to adulthood.

This role includes helping families and youth explore their emotions, identify strengths and challenges, set goals, and work through them in a supportive and structured way. The Counsellor provides individual and group therapy both at UNYA and through outreach, and they also contribute to UNYA’s Live-In Programs by creating and facilitating meaningful psycho-educational groups and circles in collaboration with other Counsellors.

**This position is 40 hours per week and maintains a Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, however hours may very to best meet the needs of the youth and families.** This position reports directly to the Director of Clinical Programs.

**Qualifications and Conditions**:

- **Experience**: One year of recent related experience working with Indigenous youth, addressing mental health, substance use, and family challenges; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and lived experience.
- **Cultural Knowledge**: Understanding of the family and social issues faced by Indigenous youth today, including the generational impacts of the residential school system on families and communities.
- **Certifications**: First Aid certificate is an asset, though paid training is available upon hire.
- **Driving**: Valid Class 5 Driver’s License is a requirement.
- **Background Check**: Satisfactory criminal record check.
- **Health Requirements**: Proof of COVID-19 vaccinations
