CLASSIFICATION: Counsellor II, Temporary Part-time, TERM to March 2025 with possible extension
HOURS: 0.5 FTE, all clinic sites (Westside primarily) (18.75 hours per week)
SALARY: Collective Agreement CUPE #974
CORE FUNCTION: To promote the mental, emotional, and social health and well-being of Saskatoon and district
people who are Indigenous and/or Westside clinic patients. To do this through individual,
couple, and family therapy, education, advocacy, community action, program leadership, and
connecting clients to cultural services and resources.
DUTIES:
- Provides counselling and psychotherapy to Saskatoon and district people who are
Indigenous and Westside Clinic patients.
- Specializes in the psychotherapeutic treatment of several of the following: depression;
anxiety; stress; relationship problems; phobic states; psychophysiological disorders;
eating disorders; sexual dysfunction; alcohol and drug dependency; post-traumatic stress;
suicide risk and suicide bereavement; parenting problems; child behavioural problems
and symptoms (using family therapy); chronic pain; chronic coping problems; adolescent
adjustment problems; domestic violence; grief; and adults who are sexually abused as
children. Other areas of expertise might include: contraception and unplanned pregnancy
counselling; social management of chronic psychiatric disorders; vocational rehabilitation;
sensitivity to: race, sexual orientation, gender, and class.
- Takes responsibility as the primary counsellor/psychotherapist and case manager for
clients.
- Caseload will include some complex and difficult-to-serve cases.
- Interviews clients and assesses personal, family, social and employment functioning
relevant to the problems and symptoms presented. Assesses social and other
environmental concerns.
- Determines a service plan and facilitates it through: individual, couple and family therapy;
group treatment; connecting clients to cultural services and resources; and/or
environmental change. Monitors and follows-up on client progress.
- Treats clients’ emotional, psychological, and relationship difficulties using a range of
therapeutic models and methods.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Master’s degree in Social Work or Psychology, or the equivalent in work experience,
training and education. (To qualify as having the equivalent to a Master’s degree, a
person must have a Bachelor degree, such as a B.S.W. or B.A. (Hon. Psych) that includes
several courses in counselling theory and practice and a counselling practicum, plus
additional training and at least six years’ experience as a psychotherapist).
- Eligible for registration in a professional association and eligible for liability insurance to
practice psychotherapy
- Three years’ experience as a mental health therapist.
- Experience in intake triage and brief therapy.
- Significant clinical training in a broad range of assessment and treatment skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work as an independent practitioner within a multi-disciplinary
primary health care team.
- Compatible with the philosophy and policies of CHSA.
- Must be bondable.
- EMR experience preferred.
