**OVERVIEW**

Along with the other team members, plans and carries out age-appropriate programs in accordance with Early Learning for Every Child Today (ELECT) curriculum and How Does Learning Happen guidelines to enhance the children’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional development according to the Child Care Early Years’ Act and the program criteria. The incumbent will incorporate learning experiences into the program designed to meet the individual needs of the children and where possible therapeutic programs as required, such as speech therapy, physiotherapy, etc.

Provide a physically safe and emotionally supportive environment showing sensitivity to the individual needs of the children in all aspects of their development.

Uphold the philosophy of the program and The Ottawa-Carleton Head Start Association for Preschools.

**Reporting to the Program Coordinator, responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to**:

- Giving first priority to the child’s needs.
- Be accepting of all children without regard to race, creed, religion, socio-economic status.
- Ensuring age appropriate programming that enhances the children’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional development is provided.
- Using ELECT and How Does Learning Happen, establishes and carries out a schedule that incorporates child-directed activities, as well as care routines and transitions keeping in mind the requirements of the agency’s Policies and Procedures and the Child Care Early Years Act.
- Uses appropriate teaching techniques to maintain those suitable behaviour limits
- Serves nutritious snacks to the children using proper food handling techniques
- Ensures positive communication with families through regular verbal and written contact regarding the program and the children
- Maintains a professional appearance, demeanor, and attitude at all times
- Acts as an appropriate role model
- Maintains a high level of confidentiality in all interactions
- Protects the health and safety of others by adopting safe work practices and reporting unsafe conditions immediately
- Maintaining documentation: Completes necessary documentation, charts and authorizations in a timely manner.
- Monitoring all areas frequented by the children for safety, hygienic conditions including but not limited to playrooms, washrooms, and playgrounds.
- Maintaining a neat, organized playroom that is attractive to the Children.
- Ensuring the philosophy of Hawthorne Meadows Nursery School Inc. is respected.
- As a professional Registered Early Childhood Educator is responsible to and supportive of The Code of Conduct and Code of Ethics of the College of Early Childhood Educators of Ontario.
- In keeping with the requirements of the College of Early Childhood Educators, avails oneself of professional development opportunities.
- Ensures compliance with the CCEYA, provincial regulations and agency policies, procedures and best practices
- Participates in ongoing professional development and attends/maintains all mandatory training / staff meetings.
- Performs other reasonable duties that may be assigned

**SKILLS AND EDUCATION**
- Early Childhood Education Diploma or Recognized Equivalence
- Member in good standing of the College of ECE’s (or in process of obtaining)
- Current Standard First Aid, CPR “C”
- Confirmation of full vaccination (2 doses) for COVID-19 is a required
- up to date immunizations.
- Criminal Reference Check for the Vulnerable Sector not more than 6 months old.
- Experience in a group child care program, previous experience working with Toddlers and preschool aged children will be considered an asset.
- High level of interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong programming skills and good knowledge of child development
- Self-motivating and strong leadership skills
- Organized; time management skills.
- Must be able to work flexible hours.
- Extensive knowledge of early years child development.
- Valid first aid and CPR level C certification, including infant and child.
- Satisfactory vulnerable sector check.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
- Problem solver and proactive thinker.
- Effective time-manager and multi-tasker.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
- Experience with special needs children will be considered an asset.
- Must be able to work flexible hours.

**WORK CONDITIONS**:

- Extended periods of standing
- Ability to work within a child-friendly environment, including on the floor, working at child-size furniture, or play structures
