St Thomas, Canada Fresh Start Support Services Full time

**Fresh Start Support Services (Fresh Start)** s is a community services center that is a multi-service, non-profit, charitable, community agency located in St Thomas, Ontario. Fresh Start's mission is to provide a safe and supportive environment for families while putting Christ's love into action. We therefore support pregnant and parenting women, children, and families in a non-judgmental, inclusive environment by providing supportive transitional housing, community drop-in programs, parenting programs, child development screening and support, system navigation, and practical support. Our programs and services aid families in developing the skills required to end the cycle of hurt and poverty. Through our programs we hope our clients can sever cycles of trauma and foster healthy attachment in the infant-parent relationship, building healthier family units integrated into their own communities. We do this by working collaboratively as a multidisciplinary team with community partners to provide holistic programs and support that respond to mental health, parenting, educational and transitional needs.

All Fresh Start’s programs are trauma informed and attachment focused and built on a Christian theological foundation and with the purpose to show Christ’s love. All the programs and services are open to families, young parents and their children living in the broader community regardless of the client’s race, color, sex, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, genetic information, pregnancy, or any other protected characteristic.

Ujima Project at Fresh Start Support Services is an initiative of the Ontario Association of Young Parents Agencies (“OAYPA”). This initiative has implemented 9 Early Childhood Development Hubs throughout Ontario. Fresh Start Support Services serves as one of the Early Childhood Development Hubs.

The Program Coordinator, Early Literacy Specialist (ELS) supports early literacy and numeracy programming for young parents and their children 0-6 years old, under the umbrella of Project Ujima. The ELS will provide individual or group interventions, workshops or consultations to young parents, and caregivers as well as community partners. The ELS identifies literacy, communications, social and emotional child development issues through early and routine developmental screening with Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQ) and proactive early literacy supports. The ELS develops individualized plan for children with identified issues, provides strategies for young parents at home, facilitates early literacy programming, makes referrals for speech and language services, healthcare providers and other developmental early intervention supports, and works closely with Early Childhood Network partner. The ELS will work with the service partners to determine their understanding of infant, and early childhood mental health and work with healthcare leaders to determine gaps in the model of care. The ELS will receive free training in performing ASQ - ages and stages screening and providing DSP - development support plans. The ELS will also receive complimentary training to provide evidence based Baby Love - early attachment program.
