Environmental Health and Safety Specialist

**General Description**:
The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for designing, planning, implementing, and managing workplace environmental health and safety programs, policies and procedures. This role involves ensuring compliance with regulations, conducting risk assessments, and promoting a culture of safety among employees.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Design and implement safety and environmental policies and procedures including, but not limited to, written programs, recordkeeping, reports, inspections, monitoring, testing, and training.
- Ensure compliance with federal and provincial EHS regulations by staying informed about changes, interpreting requirements, and implementing necessary adjustments to programs, processes, and policies.
- Deliver EHS training programs to employees at all levels, to ensure employees’ knowledge, understanding and adherence to safety and environmental regulations pertaining to all facilities.
- Conduct and document regular EHS audits and inspections as needed to assure compliance with applicable permits, regulations, and requirements.
- Assist with site safety inspections to assess compliance with policies and regulations, identifying, determining, and implementing, corrective and preventative measures for areas with existing or potential accident and health hazards.
- Manages WSIB and EHS programs, including cost control/reduction and accident prevention/ reduction, safety behavior audit, and risk assessment programs.
- Assist with the proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and environmental regulations.
- Establish and promote a culture of continuous improvement in EHS performance by evaluating existing programs, identifying areas for enhancement, and coordinating development of and EHS improvement strategic plan, collaborating with site managers.
- Analyze safety history, manufacturing processes, product machinery, and chemical exposures to determine safety hazards, identify trends, and develop safety strategies to correct and prevent potential accidents or health hazards.
- Promotes teamwork by motivating and inspiring employees to participate in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) activities.
- Resolve issues and provide coaching through daily presence on the production floor.
- Lead and facilitate Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings.
- Lead in-house training with operations team to address health and safety issues and risks and transfer knowledge.
- Assist with incident investigations, near miss reporting, job hazard analysis; recommends actions in order to ensure compliance.
- Participate in annual customer audit process.
- Partner with Supervisors/Managers to determine modified duties/schedules, and return to work plans.
- Work with our Temporary agencies to share best practices related to H&S and jointly manage the return to work program.
- All other duties as assigned.
**Education**
- Completion of Post-secondary education in related field.
- Joint health and Safety Committee Certified.
**Knowledge/Experience**
- Minimum 1 years related experience, preferably in manufacturing industry.
- Minimum 1 years managing WSIB claims and return to work programs.
- Knowledge of Environmental Health & Safety in a manufacturing environment.
- Full working knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act in relation to manufacturing; ability to interpret and implement as per the ACT _(Green Book savvy)_
- Excellent interpersonal /communication skills; ability to positively influence and create change.
- System Certification (WHMIS), Certified Safety Professional (ASP/CSP).
- Maintains strict confidentiality and protects privacy of confidential/sensitive information.
- Exceptional time management and organization skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously establishing priorities to meet deadlines.
- Ability to communicate effectively (verbal, written, and presentations).
- Proactive; exercises sound judgment and decision making; able to identify problems and needs and develop solutions and/or options.
- Self-confident, self-motivated professional who thrives in a challenging, fast-paced environment.
**Job Types**: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: $65,000.00-$75,000.00 per year
