**Background**

The Enterprise Machine Intelligence and Learning Initiative (EMILI) was created in 2016 to prepare and empower the Manitoba economy to leverage digital disruption for success with a specific focus on digital agriculture. EMILI is a digital agriculture accelerator, based in Manitoba with projects that span the country. We work with industry and academia to advance the adoption of intelligent technologies and to provide people with the skills and training required to succeed in a digital economy.

EMILI’s Capital Enablement portfolio of activities supports start-ups and connects agri-food entrepreneurs with resources, mentorship, connections, and financial support to expand digital agriculture and attract new business to Manitoba.

**Areas of Responsibility**
- Identify potential entrepreneurs and innovators who may benefit from EMILI’s services- Develop EMILI’s network of mentors, supports, capital and service providers in Manitoba and the prairies- Provide direct mentorship to clients including general direction, feasibility assessment, and on-going supports- Connect clients with external mentors by matchmaking their needs with network mentor’s skills/resources- In collaboration with our Innovation Farms Manager, arrange for client access to EMILI’s full-scale commercial farm for product development, testing, and demonstration- Assist clients in drafting business documents including business plans, marketing plans, strategic plans and/or pitch presentations- Organize educational and/or networking events for digital agriculture start-ups and entrepreneurs- Develop resources for digital agriculture entrepreneurs to be shared and promoted via EMILI’s online channels (newsletter, website, social media)- Organize capital enablement sessions of EMILI’s annual Agriculture Enlightened conference- Maintain records of supports provided to clients and reach achieved for EMILI to report back to funders on the success of our programming- Serve as the lead point of contact with our capital enablement funding partner- Represent EMILI at events and networking functions to promote EMILI’s capital enablement activities- Support other portfolio areas as assigned

**Metrics/Outcomes**

The success of the portfolio will be determined by:

- New business relationships established (mentors, supports, capital and service providers)- Identification of innovative entrepreneurs, start-up companies, and small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in need of collaborative services (clients)- Business relationships brokered and/or access to external resources facilitated- Increase in knowledge partners engaged (research institutes, associations, universities)- Increase in collaborative partners engaged (incubators, accelerators, innovation centres)- Increase in service partners engaged (consultants, professional service providers, specialized service providers)- New business resources developed and delivered- Engagement and reach of resources and events- Support of underserved communities including women, Indigenous populations, new immigrants- Conference session attendees, sponsorship and satisfaction- Strategic referrals, and collaboration with other portfolio managers or project leaders at EMILI- The integration of the capital enablement portfolio within EMILI and alignment of programming with EMILI’s strategic priorities

**Working Expectations**

The Manager of Capital Enablement will be expected to exercise a high degree of autonomy and the position will require a goal-focused self-starter. Access to shared resources within EMILI (e.g. financial, human resources, marketing, reporting) will support the Manager of Capital Enablement. This role is primarily work-from-home with frequent in-person meetings internally and with clients, mentors, partners, funders, etc.

A key focus for the Manager of Capital Enablement in the first year will be to build structure around EMILI’s existing capital enablement activities, in order to promote our services to new audiences and enable our programming to scale over time.

At this time, this role has no full-time direct reports. Support from a part-time hire, consultant/contractors, and or a temporary employee (e.g. co-op student program) may be used to support the capital enablement portfolio once the incumbent has settled into the role and program plans are formalized.
- Experience in a similar role supporting entrepreneurs or experience working with another organization providing similar services- Some formal education in business, agri-business, agriculture, or a related field- Current knowledge of advanced/emerging technologies, business development and the Canadian start-up landscape- Experience with the agriculture sector- Drivers license and access to a personal vehicle which can be used for work purposes (per km allowance provided)- Access to a suitable home workspace which can be used for work purposes
