- The Public Health Response (PHR) Team is seeking an experienced
- **Public Health Physician for Integrated Respiratory Surveillance.** Reporting to the Medical Director of PHR, the Public Health Physician supports the ongoing development of the service as a bridge to other scientific and research resources within the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) but also as a hub that links to related health capacity within PHSA, the regional Health Authorities and the Ministry of Health.- This role is integral to the mandate of the BCCDC in disease surveillance and communicable disease control. The individual provides medical leadership and oversight for provincial respiratory surveillance, outbreak investigation and management, as well as program and policy analysis. The Public Health Physician makes informed recommendations around communicable disease control and related activities. In addition, the Physician provides consultation and epidemiologic expertise and undertakes program evaluation and relevant research activities to address gaps in knowledge related to respiratory infections and emerging communicable diseases.- The Public Health Physician is responsible for public health programs and projects that support:
- BC Health Authorities in meeting their management and service delivery responsibilities;
- The provincial Ministry of Health in meeting its policy and legislation and stewardship responsibilities;
- The Office of the Provincial Health Officer in meeting its legislated and public health leadership responsibilities.
- The Public Health Physician must be able to provide senior scientific and medical oversight to division staff who deliver a wide variety of public health services and programs.- Specific tasks will include the following:
- Supports the Medical Director in the provision of leadership within the PHR Service Line;
- Contributes to the development of strategic and operational plans for PHR consistent with BCCDC priorities;
- Works with the Medical Director to further develop the capacity of the PHR to develop intelligence and disseminate insights, convene provincial and regional partners, and lead the development of guidelines and knowledge products.
- The successful Public Health Physician must:
- Be medically qualified and licensed to practice in British Columbia.
- At all times hold and maintain licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia, all required licenses, liability insurance (Canadian Medical Protective Association), and meet all requirements of BCCDC and PHSA for this position.
- Possess a Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) preferably in Public Health & Preventive Medicine- Excellent communication skills, including public speaking and public relations.
- Ability to supervise clinical and administrative staff.
- Effective interpersonal skills, mature judgment and flexibility.
- Experience (ideally 2 or more years) as a Medical Health Officer, Communicable Disease Epidemiologist, or Field Epidemiologist, are assets.
- Ability and experience in designing, implementing, and conducting studies, their interpretation, written reporting and publication.
- Demonstrated ability to secure grant funding in support of research initiatives also considered an asset.
