This is a Green Team position funded by the Province of Manitoba. Applicants must be between 18 and 29 (inclusive), legally entitled to work in Canada and have a valid Social Insurance Number.

Position Summary: Working in collaboration with WCWRC staff, the Garden Program Assistant will maintain WCWRC’s community garden on McGee Street. They will complete daily maintenance of the garden, including cleaning, planting, watering and harvesting, and will support volunteers and community members who help and/or access the garden. They may also support other programs of the Community Services Department as needed.

Start Date: June 6 ,2024

**Salary**: $19/hour

Time requirement: 30 hours per week, 16-week contract

Closing date:May 24, 2024

**Responsibilities**:

- Assist with the preparation, planting, maintenance and harvest plan for the 2024 garden season designed to maximize community participation
- Ongoing maintenance of WCWRC garden beds, including weeding, watering and cleaning of the space as needed
- Cutting grass as needed
- Provide support and troubleshoot concerns with community gardeners
- Assist with facilitating workshops and training events for the community on gardening
- Supporting volunteers in the community garden
- Provide support for information management and communication: harvest data, labeling, promotion.
- Working with team members to create a positive environment

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Essential
- Experience planting, harvesting and maintaining gardens
- Knowledge of food security issues in Winnipeg’s inner city
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Self-motivated, able to work with mínimal supervision
- Willingness to obtain criminal Reference Check and Child Abuse Checks
- Experienced in working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and religions
- Must be comfortable working effectively cross-culturally and with participants with low English levels
- Must be comfortable working outdoors
- Excellent interpersonal communication and conflict management skills
- Ability to lift up to 50lb

Preferred
- Lived experience of overcoming housing insecurity, homelessness, poverty and/or marginalization strongly preferred
- Ability to work within anti-racist and anti-oppressive frameworks and actively engage in ongoing learning about these frameworks
- Strong understanding of and ability to practice harm reduction
- Experience working within the non-profit sector
- Experience with planning and facilitation
- Experience working collaboratively with community organizations
- Existing knowledge of the issues of marginalization
- Strong understanding of empowerment philosophies
