The Special Services Librarian provides information and reader’s advisory services,, helps customers use the library’s physical and digital services, participate in programming and outreach, train and supervise staff, and assist in the maintenance of the collections.

**As the** **_Special Services Librarian,_** **you will**:

- Provide and ensure the provision of responsive and inclusive specialized information and readers’ advisory services to customers.
- Supervise the Special Services Section as required, directing the workflow, establishing priorities, handling contentious issues, etc.
- Provide orientation and on the job training to new employees, supervises and provides feedback to Information Services staff as required.
- Provide tours, user instruction sessions and staff development sessions as required.
- Participates in the planning, delivery and promotion of specialized services and programs in the Section.
- Plans, provides and ensures the provision of new and innovative programs and services to targeted communities in the Section.
- Supervises the Special Services Section as required.
- Participates in collection maintenance and selection as required.
- Contributes to public awareness of the Section by making public presentations, developing promotional materials, creating displays and responding to media requests as appropriate.
- Participates in outreach initiatives for the Section.
- Participates on system committees, manages special projects, compiles statistics and prepares reports and grant proposals as assigned.
- Performs other duties consistent with the classification, as required.

**Your education and qualifications include**:

- A Master of Library & Information Sciences (MLIS) degree from an institution accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). An MLIS degree (or equivalent) obtained internationally through a formally accredited institution may also be considered.
- Demonstrated ability to provide excellent client-centered customer service.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and supervise the work of others and to work effectively as part of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and provide quality programs, tours, user instruction and make public presentations.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a variety of staff and customers.
- Must possess good planning and organizational skills.
- Ability to effectively promote the library and its services, programs and collections.
- Knowledge and understanding of the occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures that are applicable to the area of work.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Policy.

**Conditions of employment**:

- Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position (i.e. Must be able to lift boxes and equipment weighing 20-25 pounds and set up tables and chairs in meeting rooms)
- The successful applicant will be required to complete job specific training for this position.
- Applicants may be required to undergo testing to determine their knowledge, abilities as they relate to the qualifications of the position
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.
