The Youth Services Librarian, working under the direction of the Children’s and Teen Services Head Librarian, is responsible for the planning, development, delivery, evaluation and promotion of effective responsive quality library services for families and youth at the Millennium Library. The Youth Services Librarian also provides general information and reader’s advisory services to children, young adults and adults, assists with the planning and scheduling of the work of the Section, participates in programming and outreach initiatives, assists in the maintenance and development of the collection and promotes effective responsive library services and programs.

**As the** **_Youth Services Librarian_** **you will**:

- Provide and ensure the provision of information and reader’s advisory services to children, young adults and adults.
- Plan, organize, and supervise the delivery of children and youth services at the Millennium Library.
- Assist with maintenance and development of Youth Services collections.
- Supervise the Youth Services Section as required, directing the workflow, establishing priorities, handling contentious issues, etc.
- Participate in the planning and scheduling of work within the Section.
- Participate in the programming and outreach initiatives of the Section.
- Assist in building partnerships with other City departments, community groups and external agencies.
- Promote the library’s services & materials for young adults, children & families.
- Provide user instruction and staff development sessions.
- Participate as a member of various system committees.
- Assist in overseeing the good order of the branch facility and grounds.
- Perform other related duties consistent with the classification as assigned.

**Your education and qualifications include**:

- A Master of Library & Information Sciences (MLIS/MLS) degree from an institution accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). An MLIS degree (or equivalent) obtained internationally through a formally accredited institution may also be considered.
- Previous library experience is an asset.
- Must possess a thorough knowledge of children’s and young adult literature, and trends and current events.
- Ability to evaluate and integrate the use of information technologies in the provision of library services.
- Ability to plan and provide quality programs for young adults, children & families.
- Ability to make presentations and promote library materials, services and programs to the community.
- Ability to deal effectively with the public and staff on a problem-solving basis.
- Ability to work as a member of a team and to maintain effective working relationships.
- Strong planning and organizational skills.
- A strong commitment to public service and the ability to work with a diverse patronage.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge and understanding of the occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures that are applicable to the area of work.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Policy.
- Must have successfully completed the following courses or be prepared to complete within one year:

- “Foundations of Supervisory Development or Workplace Leader”
- “Safety Responsibilities for Supervisors/Managers”
- “Diversity in the Workplace-The role of the Supervisor/Manager”
