**FOOD SECURITY COORDINATOR**

**PROGRAM**
The Health & Social Department, in collaboration with the Tsartlip First Nation and broader community, is responsible for increasing the capacity and sustainability of the department and enhance engagement and ownership of the health of the W̱SÁNEĆ people. The department develops and implements health programs that incorporate the traditions, values and strengths of the W̱SÁNEĆ people.

**PURPOSE OF THE POSITION**
The Food Security Coordinator (Coordinator) is responsible for developing and coordinating food security initiatives. The Coordinator will inspire the Tsartlip community to contribute to their own food sovereignty, to produce food locally, to encourage the eating of traditional foods and promote the continuation of traditional food sharing networks.

**SUPERVISION RECEIVED**
The Food Security Coordinator operates under the direct supervision of the Health Programs Manager (Manager).

**SUPERVISION EXERCISED**
The Food Security Coordinator does not supervise employees but will guide Volunteers assisting with food distribution activities.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Develops and implements short and long-term strategies to address food security issues which may include the implementation of food distribution, food sourcing and other food security related tasks;
- Leads, coordinates and manages the logistics of food security initiatives, including supply sourcing, procurement, and distribution of The Good Food Box program;
- Coordinates a wide range of activities related to community-based gardens including native plant gardens, permaculture, and eco sustainability;
- Utilizes various mediums such as surveys, social media to raise awareness about food security and sovereignty and to identify and address food security issues/concerns identified by the community;
- Researches, plans, and implements measures that evaluate, and address issues related to food security;
- Utilizes community resources and knowledge holders to develop educational resources;
- Develops and facilitates community events and workshops related to traditional food identification and sustainable food production such as canning and preserving, dehydrating and community kitchens;
- Advocates for changes in existing government programs and policies to improve food security and sovereignty;
- Plans, develops and implements food security, food systems, and food rescue community programs;
- Identifies environmental issues related to traditional and non-traditional food security;
- Develops relationships with Tsartlip community members and employees as well as external partners, and communicates and responds to routine requests or inquiries;
- Works with the Manager to develop the annual program budget;
- Researches and prepares funding proposals including the establishment of work plans and budgets to track third party funding requirements; submits financial, statistical and narrative reports as required by funders and the Manager;
- Creates collaborative partnerships with other community agencies regarding program development and delivery;
- Monitors areas of responsibility for opportunities for improvement and innovation and works proactively to implement these;
- Attends departmental meetings and community events as required;
- Participates in relevant training and workshops identified by the Manager to enhance program services;
- Ensures that service quality standards are maintained and consistently delivered in all areas of responsibility;
- Maintains strict confidentiality and exercises sound judgment and discretion when dealing with sensitive issues;
- Presents a professional, positive and helpful attitude at all times;
- Promotes a safe work place; ensures that all established safety procedures are followed;
- Carries out other duties essential to the position as directed by the Manager.

**FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY**
- The Coordinator adheres to the program budget established by the Manager.

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**
- Degree, diploma or certification in Horticulture, gardening, urban agriculture or organic farming preferred
- Minimum 2 years of experience planning, developing and implementing community-based food delivery programs and resources; or
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience;
- Experience researching funding opportunities and preparing funding proposals;
- Experience developing and delivering workshops;
- Experience developing, managing and controlling operating budgets;
- Experience developing a variety of written reports, policy and procedures, and other documentation;
- Experience working in a First Nations community an asset;
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license and reliable vehicle plus a clean driver’s abstract and appropriate insurance required;
- Clean criminal record check with Vulnerable Sector required.
- Valid standard first aid and CPR certificate may be required.
