**Course Number and Title**:POL 304H1 S - Topics in Methods (**_Using Data to Understand Politics and Society_**)**:
**Course description**:Students will learn about role of data for politics and society, and several approaches to understand these data. How do information and data shape politics and policies? What insights can we gain about contemporary and past societies from the data they produce? To answer these questions we will examine ideas and concepts associated with measurement and information theory, and especially how they have been applied to evaluate, build, sustain, and change societies. This course will draw from topics in the study of international relations, economics, political behavior, and statistics to offer a diverse set of tools for processing and analyzing different types of data. Topics addressed will include war and conflict, social media, elections and representation, network analysis, and text analysis.

**Estimated TA support**: 50 hours TA support will be provided to the course.

**Estimated course enrollment**: 50 students

**Class schedule**: Monday 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.
- This course is scheduled to be delivered in-person. Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, this course may be delivered in-person, remotely/online, or by a combination of delivery methods as determined by the Faculty or Department at a later date.

Sessional Lecturers III (Long Term) - $10,570.02

**Minimum Qualifications**:

- PhD in Political Science is required.
- Teaching experience at the university level is required**.**

**Preferred Qualifications**:

- Previous experience in teaching a similar course is preferred**.**

**Description of duties**:

- Preparation of course syllabus and course marking scheme
- Planning and teaching weekly lectures
- Setting and marking assignments/tests/exams and course administration in accordance with University regulations as described in the Faculty of Arts & Science Academic Handbook for Instructors
- Submission of grades
- Available for office hours for academic counselling of students
- Dealing with student enquiries, appeals and petitions
- Supervising and training TAs
