**Position Summary**:
The primary function of the Chaplain Treatment team is to provide an opportunity for patients to address concerns they may have about their own spirituality, the spiritual aspects of the 12 Step Program and to provide spiritual counselling.
An Edgewood Chaplain understands and can explain and discuss a variety of models of addiction, key issues, concepts and other problems related to substance abuse, consistently and effectively in routine and clinical interactions. The chaplain competently demonstrates and transfers this knowledge to peers, coworkers and patients.
**Duties and Responsibilities**:
- Provide individual spiritual counselling as agreed necessary by the treatment team.
- Monitors and assists patients when having difficulties writing their Fourth Steps.
- Prepares patients for the Fourth Step and provides all necessary tools.
- Documents assessment findings and treatment recommendations by developing a comprehensive interpretive review of the 5th Step and Using Cycle along with a Life Tapestry review.
- Facilitate group counselling sessions with patients.
- Confront patients on delusional and dishonest thinking.
- Helps patients understand treatment process; the use of assignments, handouts and activities.
- Assist patients to recognize their disease, related behaviours and ultimately accept its seriousness and pervasiveness.
- Able to establish a rapport/relationship with patients and staff.
- Seek appropriate supervision and consultation.
- Describe, summarize and document patient behaviour, progress and identify issues that may be pertinent to the treatment plan.
- Write comprehensive (SOAP) progress notes that convey the treatment process as experienced by the patient and record progress in relation to goals and objectives.
- Help patients to commit to themselves to take appropriate action relative to their use of mood altering chemicals and behaviours.
- Conduct aftercare planning, relapse prevention, discharge planning when asked by the Clinical Director or Supervisor.
- Able to assist in the management of crisis situations.
- Describe Edgewood’s Treatment Philosophy, practices, relapse prevention and continuing care policies for addiction and other substance related problems.
- Deliver lectures and educational presentations.
- Demonstrate knowledge of accepted principles of client record management.
- Understand the established diagnostic criteria for substance abuse disorders and can describe treatment modalities and placement criteria with the continuum of care.
- Provide treatment services appropriate to the personal and cultural identity and language of the patient.
- Ensure proper communication to ensure continuity of care using the Log Book and Communication Book between the Support, Accounting, Administration Staff and Admissions Coordinators.
- Understands and uses the Treatment Norms to coordinate individualized treatment to the patients.
- Analyze and interpret data to determine treatment recommendations.
**Experience and Qualifications**:
The Edgewood Chaplain:
- Must be an ordained minister or priest of a generally recognized religion.
- Must be willing to work in a non-denominational capacity.
- Must have a general working knowledge of the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12 Step programs.
- Must possess superior reading, writing and communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
- Must understand a variety of models and theories of addiction.
- Must be able to describe the behavioral, psychological, physical health and social effects of substance behaviours on the user and significant others.
- Must be able to recognize the potential for substance use/behaviour disorders to mimic or coexist with other medical and psychological disorders.
- Recognizes the importance of family and community in the treatment and recovery process.
- Understands the value of an interdisciplinary approach to addiction treatment.
- Understands and is able to incorporate into practice the relevant needs of culturally diverse groups and people with challenges.
- Is strongly encouraged to hold a Spiritual Direction degree or diploma and two units of CPE Training.
