**The John Howard Society of Peterborough **is looking for a dynamic, creative and well-organized individual to work with youth in our school-based programs (collaborations with the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board). This includes our Long-Term Suspensions & Expulsions program and our Restorative Justice & Conflict Mediation (RJCM) program. You will have an opportunity to work closely with youth to provide programming that supports more effective conflict resolution and/ or a successful return to school. You may work individually or in small groups, or with whole classrooms. This includes connecting youth with other community services, which may include housing, employment and mentoring.

**Duties and Responsibilities: Long-Term Suspension & Expulsions Program (LTSEP)**
Our Youth Workers provide positive behavioural programming and supports (ex. anger management or career counselling) to help engage and motivate LTSEP students and encourage positive behaviour. Students are required to participate as a condition of their suspension or expulsion, however effective youth engagement is critical to ensuring they fulfil that criteria. The Suspension/Expulsion Program is housed at PACE on McDonnel Street.

From 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., LTSEP students are provided with academic programming. From 12 p.m. - 2:30 p.m., alternative programming is delivered by our Youth Worker. This may include guest speakers, recreation, small group work, or arts-based programming. Our Youth Workers are responsible for motivating, engaging and supporting LTSEP students in these activities. Primary tasks include (but are not limited to) the following:

- Ensuring the LTSEP program protects and promotes the safety of clients and community;
- Adhering to ethical & confidentiality guidelines regarding clients and volunteers;
- Active participation in case coordination, as relevant, between the John Howard Society and local police services, justice sector services, educators, volunteers, and collateral social service providers;
- Ongoing liaison with Kawartha Pine Ridge School Board staff;
- Maintaining accurate and reliable statistical information for quarterly reporting purposes (entered into our EMHware database);
- Attending appropriate staff meetings and training;
- Collaborating with the Youth Justice diversion team at John Howard Society to provide responsive and effective client services;
- Conducting assessments with incoming youth clients to evaluate their needs and strengths;
- Motivating youth to adopt prosocial, health-conscious behaviours and attitudes;
- Facilitating goal-oriented discussions between youth clients and their supporters;
- Acting as a positive mentor and role model to youth;
- Keeping informed of issues, information, and education related to best practices and evidence-based programming in youth working;
- Attending school reintegration meetings with students;
- Contributing to community committees and initiatives relevant to the success of youth and the provision of Suspension/ Expulsion client services;
- Undertaking other duties as assigned by the Executive Director to improve or enhance the delivery of service;
**Duties and Responsibilities: Restorative Justice & Conflict Mediation (RJCM)**
Our Youth Workers provide Nonviolent Communication workshops in classrooms and as mediation training in local high schools between 8:15am - 2:45pm weekdays. Workshops are 75 minutes long and we usually run 3 during a school day. Primary tasks include (but are not limited to) the following:

- Ensuring the program protects and promotes the safety of clients and community;
- Adhering to ethical & confidentiality guidelines regarding clients and volunteers;
- Assisting the lead facilitator with classroom workshops;
- Ongoing liaison with Kawartha Pine Ridge School Board staff to schedule workshops;
- Assisting with preparing workshop materials and setting up the classroom as needed;
- Supporting youth to learn Nonviolent Communication conflict resolution skills during classroom workshops;
- Maintaining accurate and reliable statistical information for quarterly reporting purposes (entered into our EMHware database);
- Undertaking other duties as assigned by the Executive Director to improve or enhance the delivery of service;
- A strong commitment to youth work as central to fostering community wellness;
- An understanding of risk and resiliency factors affecting youth today;
- An understanding of the dynamics that often exacerbate youth behaviour and adult conflicts with youth;
- An accepting, collaborative, client-led, and non-authoritarian approach;
- An understanding of community mediation, restorative practices, peace building and Nonviolent Communication skills;
- Patience, tolerance, creativity and flexibility;
