Specialist, Environmental Affairs

**PURPOSE**
The Specialist, Environmental Affairs is accountable to the Manager, Environmental Affairs for managing the organization’s annual environmental portfolio work (including Phase I ESAs and Annual Asbestos Inspections), environmental property budgets and business plans, spills, Phase II ESAs and claims management. In addition, job responsibilities include ensuring overall compliance and adherence with applicable government regulations and company policies and procedures.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**

Participates in the development of, monitors and manages the progress of various environmental projects (e.g. training initiatives, semi-annual compliance reports, asbestos records, etc.) within the organization to ensure compliance with company’s policies and applicable government regulations.
**3. Environmental Audits**
Oversees, supervises and coordinates all environmental activities and required audits to ensure full compliance with company’s policies and applicable regulations.
**4. Stakeholder Support**
Assists the function manager by carrying out budget preparation at the both departmental and national/international levels for all organizational environmental activities, compilation of various investor reporting, providing expertise and coaching to all departmental staff to ensure that the environmental affairs group functions effectively at all times.
**5. Environmental Portfolio, Budgets and Business Plans**
Responsibilities include management of the annual Phase I Environmental Assessment, Asbestos Inspection and Designated Substances Surveys to ensure continued compliance with applicable federal, provincial and state regulations. Coordination of the Environmental Budgets and Business Plans with the portfolio requirements and all departmental work.
**6. Spills**
Management of spills (and any ensuing claims) in Canada and the United States. Responsible to coordinate external support, remediation, regulatory engagement and closing of project for all releases of contaminants, as necessary.
**7. Subsurface Investigations and Claims Management**
Oversees Subsurface Investigations within a Claims Management Framework. Responsible for working with third party consultants at the property level to ensure compliance with all environmental legislation, codes of practice and internal standards. Assist with management of environmental claims including completing various reporting and analysis tasks, technical reviews of incidents, spills and subsurface investigations and coordination with consultants to ensure that the environmental claims process is timely, accurate and compliance with external, and internal regulations, policies and procedures.

**MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**
**Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Education**
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (e.g. Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Engineering) or equivalent
- Minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of Canadian environmental practices and theories, regulatory policies, programs, legislation, and regulations (e.g., Phase I, II, III ESAs, environmental due diligence, spills, asbestos)
- Previous project management experience.

- Certification in the Environmental or Engineering field is an asset
- Project management certification is an asset
- Knowledge of Insurance and claims management an asset
