**Working for the Department of Biological Sciences**

The Department of Biological Sciences is the largest and one of the most diverse departments on campus in terms of the research interests of its academic staff. Research in the department covers ecology and evolution, entomology, genomics, immunology and infection, marine biology, microbiology, model organisms, molecular and cellular genetics, paleontology, physiology and development, and plant biology.

**Position**

The Plant Growth Facilities Operator/Horticulturalist is responsible for the day to day operations of the Department of Biological Sciences Plant Growth Facility. This position provides live plant material as requested for use in classes, procures new specimens, and maintains the permanent plant collection.

As part of the day to day operations, this position is responsible for the management and maintenance of the plant growth facilities. This includes daily checks of mechanical systems supporting plumbing/irrigation systems; electrical lighting; and heating and cooling systems. This position is required to identify opportunities for preventative maintenance within the facility and its equipment. This position is on call for equipment failures and trouble shooting. This position also collaborates with department health and safety to ensure the facility is safety compliant.

This position also provides technical assistance to the Department’s curriculum lab sections including, but not limited to; undergrad and graduate courses with the direction of the instructor for each course.

The Plant Growth Facilities Operator/Horticulturalist is also responsible for assigning, tracking and reporting space usage for research and teaching classes/labs. Billing clients for services rendered. Advising students and researchers on how to acquire supplies like soil, pots, fertilizer, seeds, etc. Assist with diagnosing plant problems and make recommendations for solutions.

**Duties**
- Technical Duties:_
- Schedule, plan and coordinate all horticultural activities within the plant growth facilities.
- Schedule seeding dates for all plants to be grown in time for classes and labs.
- Maintain plants on a daily basis, this includes watering, pruning, re-potting and fertilizing.
- Calculate fertilizer rates and concentrations depending on the plant needs. This will required calibrating and adjusting a fertilizer injector/applicator.
- Implement and maintain an integrated pest control system to prevent and control insect outbreaks on plants used for teaching.
- Ensure plants are adequately watered and tended to over long weekends and holiday closures.
- Collaborate with the direct supervisor to arrange vacation coverage by a qualified and trained colleague.
- Ensure plant facility is clean and well maintained including labelling plants.
- Order supplies such as pots, soil, fertilizer, seeds and any equipment needed to keep the facilities in good working order.
- Uses technical expertise in Plant Biology to supply high quality biological material for courses and faculty research programs.
- Maintenance Duties:_
- Install new and maintain existing lighting systems that support the plant growth facilities.
- Maintain irrigation system including replacing drip tubes and or pipe as required.
- Reset timers according to time of year and plants being grown.
