**Peer Support Worker**
**1 Permanent Position**
**Full-Time (35 hours/week)**
**Reporting To**:Manager, Community Supports
**Purpose**:The Lawrence East Partnership program is a comprehensive and collaborative support service for residents who are vulnerable and have complex needs living at two Toronto Community Housing buildings, 4175 and 4205 Lawrence Avenue East in Scarborough. As a member of an interdisciplinary team, the Peer Support Worker will work with colleagues to promote social inclusion and support access to mental health and addiction services. Working from a peer support model, the Peer Support Worker will assist individuals one-to-one with goals related to mental health and addiction recovery while facilitating social and meal programs for the community. The Peer Support Worker will contribute to assisting residents maintain successful tenancies, engage in social and recreation activities and improve their physical and mental health and addiction challenges.
**Key areas of responsibility**:
- Participates as a member of a multi-disciplinary team by sharing personal/practical experience, knowledge and first-hand insight benefiting the team and clients.
- Collaborates with others to promote a team culture that works from a client-centered, harm reduction, trauma informed and anti-oppressive approach to service.
- Provides peer counselling and client support from a strengths-based perspective, in order to promote health and wellness.
- Provides expertise and consultation from a mental health consumer perspective.
- Promotes awareness and supports client participation in consumer self-help programs and advocacy organizations to increase recovery.
- Works with clients in one-on-one and/or group situations to promote wellness, recovery and socialization.
- Promote relevant programs, services and community resources.
- Supports clients in navigating mental health services (organizational and community).
- Supports clients with their wellness planning and recovery process.
- Identification of service gaps, and ability to support program planning and advocacy efforts.
- Organize and lead individual and group social/recreational activities to increase socialization and provide skill-building opportunities.
- Actively participate in stigma reduction and awareness raising of current issues in mental health.
**Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Experience)**:
- Demonstrated knowledge gained through lived experience with mental health and/or substance use challenges, system navigation and experience with services is preferred.
- A minimum of two years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. \
- Formal peer support training is a strong asset.
- Willingness to share lived experience in a relevant and appropriate way, while maintaining appropriate peer/client boundaries as necessary.
**Essential Competencies (Skills and Attributes)**:
- Knowledge of Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act, social service benefits and related legislation in Ontario.
- Group Facilitation skills preferred.
- WRAP, PREFER certification preferred.
- Demonstration of an acceptable comfort level and sensitivity in working with individuals who have experienced chronic homelessness, severe mental health and/or substance use challenges.
- Ability to set priorities, organize and coordinate activities.
- Ability to seek assistance and guidance as appropriate.
- Demonstrate excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills to interact with clients and to maintain strong working relationships with multidisciplinary team members to ensure excellent public relations.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and interdependently within a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and utilization of online resources.
- Work a variable work schedule, which includes evening and weekends.
**Significant Working Conditions**:
- Ability to transport including lifting/carrying/pulling up to 25 lbs. or more with assistance.
- Work in low income housing environment.
- Travel and work between two locations may be required from time to time (1 block apart).
- May deal with clients with physical limitations and/or mental health challenges.
- Flexibility of hours - Required to work different shifts (day, evening, night and weekend shift).
- Working environment may include common spaces or residents homes which may not be smoke-free, may have pets or pests.
**Remuneration**: $21.74-$24.59
