The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.

**Position title**: Political Research & Student Support Commissioner
**Reports to**: Associate Vice President, External Affairs
**Employee status**: Hourly Exempt, Appointed
**Length of term**: May 1, 2024 - April 30, 2025
**Hours per week**: May 1, 2024 - August 31, 2024: 20 hours per week
**September 1, 2024 - April 30, 2025**: 15 hours per week
**Compensation**: $18.00 per hour

The Position

The Political Research & Student Support Commissioner will assist the Vice President External Affairs research efforts municipally, provincially and federally on a wide range of advocacy issues including affordable housing, student financial aid, transportation, etc. The Commissioner will also help or lead organizing creative and interactive campaigns. They will also assist Assistant Vice-President, External Affairs, in supporting students with concerns about transit and the U-Pass as they arise throughout the year.

**Responsibilities**:

- Assist VP External’s advocacy efforts by conducting research for federal, provincial, and municipal budget consultations, document briefs for meetings with stakeholders, and other research projects as assigned.
- Prepare research documents and lobby briefs with the VP External team
- Work with UBC Enrolment Services to respond to U-Pass inquiries from students, including but not limited to exemption, eligibility, subsidies.
- Work with the External Affairs team to organize advocacy campaigns.
- Works with the AMS mission statement and values to operate a successful department.
- Other duties as required

Qualifications and Experience
- Must be a currently registered student at UBC Vancouver or one of its affiliated colleges
- Strong understanding of issues at facing post-secondary students at UBC and beyond
- Able to research and write high-quality position policy papers, research papers, briefing notes, media releases
- Effective team player who can coordinate and collaborate with multiple people on a project
- Confident public speaker and professional conduct
- Knowledge of municipal, provincial and federal levels of government and their policies is required
- A strong attention to detail is required
- Strong communication (written and verbal) skills
- Experience with issue-based advocacy organizations an asset
- Experience with writing technical and non-technical reports an asset
- Experience with policy research required
- Independent, self-motivated, goal and results oriented, and reliable
- Able to research and write high quality position policy papers, research papers, briefing notes, and media releases
- Able to execute tasks quickly, efficiently, and diligently
- Able to eloquently deliver the advocacy campaigns that the External Office is promoting
- Interest in pursuing initiatives and lobbying priorities of the VP External in line with their Executive Goals
- Efficient team player who can coordinate and collaborate with multiple people on projects
- Strong strategic and critical thinking skills that translates to tangible work
- Strong organizational and logístical planning skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and is able to both lead and work within a team
- Strong creative point of view
