**Student Court Observer Criminalization & Survivorship Project**Part-time position - Halifax

Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic offers trauma-informed legal services and representation, counselling, and multilingual interpretation, and drives system transformation to support women and gender diverse people who have experienced violence. Rooted in the foundations of intersectionality, innovation, and a client-centered approach, we foster the skills and resilience of the people we serve and amplify their voices to create individual and collective change.

We are seeking Student Court Observers for our project, Criminalization & Survivorship: Strengthening GBV-sector responses to criminalization, coercive control, and litigation abuse in Canada.

Criminalization & Survivorship is a 30-month National project our clinic is leading. The project’s goal is to prevent and address the criminalization of survivors of gender-based violence by scaling up our promising practices and developing a policy paper to combat the injustice of survivor criminalization.

To accomplish our goal, we will host two bilingual forums and set up regional court observation sessions in Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal and the Greater Toronto Area to test and adapt promising practices using a gender-based analysis + (GBA+) approach. We will also consult with legal experts, partners, service providers and GBV survivors on regional realities and local adaptations.

At the end of the project, we will produce an evaluation report highlighting key findings and lessons learned. This will allow us to share information and provide training, support and implementation strategies to replicate and expand the promising practices.

This project is a multi-faceted effort to address the criminalization of GBV survivors through a combination of research, community engagement, policy development, and knowledge dissemination. Your volunteering is not only an opportunity to gain firsthand exposure to the criminal court system, you will also be contributing to the project’s evaluation report by collecting the necessary observational research we require.
