**Who we are**:
Intellectual Property Ontario (IPON) is a new provincial agency that will serve as a go-to resource for Intellectual Property (IP) expertise to help researchers and companies maximize the value of their IP, strengthen their capacity to grow and compete in the global market.

**Location**:This is a remote-first opportunity within Ontario. We have offices in both Kitchener and Toronto where the team meets on an occasional basis (monthly) or as needed.

**Responsibilities**:
The IP Manager presents and represents IPON's strategies and services with external clients to provide advice and support. They provide guidance to executive leadership on IP services and supports involving intellectual property; including the ability to assess and report on the IP position and IP strategies of our clients and prospective clients in collaboration with IP legal counsel, as necessary.

As a new agency start-up, this role requires both strategic and hands-on expertise, including:

- Operationalizes IPON's services and manages day-to-day operations of the IP intake for clients and/or prospective clients.
- Acts as one of the main points of IP contact for clients and prospective clients for their IP service needs and support, provides service navigation to assist clients in accessing the appropriate IPON services.
- Oversees the IP voucher program including supporting or leading approvals.
- Supports both external and internal teams on IP strategy related needs, including patent, trademark, tradesecret, and data related IP supports.
- Supports clients to ensure there is a match with both services offer and practical IP experience to assist in embedding IP into their business, as requested.
- Provides commercialization leadership working with IP staff, or their designates, of prospective clients to IPON, such as commercialization offices within Ontario postsecondary institutions, campus-linked accelerators and incubators, Regional Innovation Centres (RICs), the Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI), on understanding and supporting their IP needs through IPON's services.
- Works directly with companies, clients, prospective clients, and stakeholders to provide IP advice, mentorship and expertise.
- Provides advice and recommendations on changing/emerging client needs and opportunities to inform the development of IPON's strategic plans, yearly business plans and annual reports, and responsible for ensuring the long-term IP strategy service goals and objectives are met.
- Advises or contributes to IP prosecution as required, including patent filing strategies and approaches.
- Leads and/or coordinates the development of responses to requests for information from the CEO and/or the Board Chair related to policy matters of the project.
- Coordinates the preparation of briefing and/or contentious issues notes, and makes presentations/provides senior management briefings, as required.
- Provides coaching/mentoring within technical area of accountability.

**Qualifications**:

- Postsecondary degree in engineering, business or a field related to Intellectual Property - or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.
- Minimum of six (6) to seven (7) years of demonstrated "hands on" experience in the IP field providing advice or advisory support to companies as a service provider, or internally within a company.
- IP or legal background, or in-house or other industry IP management experience.
- Experience in contributing to building the IP ecosystem or supporting IP initiatives in Canada or elsewhere, an asset.
- Experience in patent analysis or landscaping in one of the priority sectors (Automotive, Artificial Intelligence, Medical Technology), is an asset.
- Demonstrated experience in assessing a company or technology's IP positions.
- Demonstrated proficiency in developing successful relationships with internal and external stakeholders where formal authority may not exist.
- Strong relationship management, collaboration and consultation skills to motivate and direct a team.
- Ability to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) to a broad range of audiences including partners, senior leadership and clients.
- Results-oriented, self-directed individual with the demonstrated ability to prioritize.
- Ability to work well independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Strong project and time management skills and ability to manage a variety of concurrent projects.
- Solid strategic and analytical thinking skills.
