We are looking for a Research Officer to lead experimentation utilizing X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the NRC’s advanced materials research facility in Mississauga. This is the first NRC Research Facility in the Greater Toronto Area and is an innovation ecosystem hub and a catalyst for accelerating the development and commercialization of advanced materials for clean energy.

In this role, you will be responsible for leading hardware development and validation, experimental design, measurement and results interpretation for XAS study, initially through the following major initiatives:

- Ex-situ evaluation of promising materials from accelerated materials discovery campaigns for battery materials and electrocatalysts to understand properties impact on performance (non-time-based);
- Battery material lifetime diagnostics, correlating changes in electronic structure and local environment to performance;
- In-situ/operando characterization for water and CO2 reduction electrolysis;
- Support the development of machine learning based analysis capabilities, and analysis - to - descriptor development algorithms; and,
- Expert liaison to enable the use of this unique laboratory scale XAS equipment by the broader research community at NRC, and in Canadian academia, industry and OGDs.

**Screening Criteria**:
**Education**:
PhD degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, materials science, or a related field.

**Experience**:

- Recent and relevant experience in materials characterization using XAS;
- Experience in the full spectrum of research activities including identification of research requirements, proposal writing, project management, experimental design, data production and analysis, and reporting through written documentation, presentations and publishing; and
- Experience in working in multi-disciplinary teams and overseeing the activities of other researchers, students, technicians, external partners and vendors;
- Experience in the development or characterization of materials for batteries, CO2 conversion or hydrogen production will be considered an asset.

- Ability to design and conduct hands-on experiments, troubleshoot and analyze results using XAS.
- Knowledge of hardware design, development and validation for XAS.
- Knowledge of the relationship between materials structure and properties.
- Knowledge in experimental design and data analysis, including automated data collection and analysis for large or complex datasets.
- Ability to manage research projects and lead a technical research team.
- Knowledge of battery, CO2 or hydrogen materials and technologies will be considered an asset.
