Roots 2 STEM is an outreach program of Capstone Engineering Academy and is an educational organization that aims to inspire and engage young students in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The organization offers a range of programs, including after-school clubs, summer camps, and workshops, that are designed to provide hands-on learning experiences for students from diverse backgrounds. Roots 2 STEM focuses on developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students by encouraging them to design, build, and test their own projects. Through its innovative approach to STEM education, Roots 2 STEM is helping to prepare the next generation of leaders and innovators who will drive progress and solve the complex challenges facing our world today.
**Position Overview**
The Camp Counsellor for Summer Programs is a critical position within our organization. Reporting directly to the Program Director, you will be responsible for planning and executing onsite camps for young participants aged 6-17. Your primary responsibility will be to create a safe and fun environment for the campers while ensuring their health, safety, well-being, and happiness.
As a Camp Counsellor, you will be responsible for supervising, assisting facilitators, and actively participating in all aspects of the campers' day. You will prepare for, organize, and lead a variety of small and large group STEM-based activities each week and ensure that all safety guidelines and Code of Conduct are being followed by the campers.
You will help write and implement a weekly schedule for your camp group, and communicate regularly with the camp facilitator regarding updates and challenges. You will participate in pre-camp training and weekly meetings, as well as clean-up and set-up/organization at the end of each day/week.
- 4pm (37.5 hours/week) and two positions open for Monday
- Friday 8:30am-4:30pm (37.5 hours/week).
**Key Responsibilities**
- Implement fun, hands-on, STEM-based learning experiences.
- Maintain program schedules.
- Provide support and care campers.
- Ensure personal and team activities align with Roots 2 STEM's business and strategic goals.
- Model high performance, flexibility, and kindness in a rapidly changing growth environment
- Perform other duties as required and assigned.
- Create a fun, safe, and engaging environment
**Qualifications & Knowledge**
- Between the ages of 18-30
- Valid First Aid Certification, or ability to obtain it within one month of the start date.
- Highly adaptable and able to remain confident in high-pressure situations.
- Strong ethics and ability to handle confidential information, if necessary
- Proven record of contributing to organizational culture and initiatives
- Positive attitude and a desire to work with a high-performing team with a focus on continuous improvement to achieve impactful results. Flexibility and a willingness to work hard and grow are essential.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to changes.
- Must have a clear criminal record and pass a Vulnerable Sector Verification check.
- Possess an insatiable curiosity about how things work and a willingness to learn and explore new ideas.
- Exude high energy and are self-starters who are eager to take on new challenges and make a positive impact.
- Have a genuine desire to work with children and youth and help them develop their skills and interests in STEM fields.
- Excel at building positive relationships with others and possess a friendly, responsible, service-oriented attitude.
- Demonstrate exceptional communication and teamwork skills and can problem-solve effectively.
- Possess fluency in English and the ability to adapt and communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Are physically able to stand for extended periods of time, bend, twist, lift arms above the head, and travel distances between the lab and outside open spaces, and lift up to 25 lbs.
