Position Overview

This position is responsible for the daily supervision of animal services operations including a staff of 8 employees, and the Animal Shelter building, as well as promoting Animal Care & Safety in the community, ensuring enforcement of the Municipal Animal Control By‑Laws (Parts I and III of the Provincial Offences Act) as well as the provincial Dog Owners Liability Act (DOLA) legislation.

**Responsibilities**:
The Supervisor, Animal Services is responsible for:
- Supervising animal services staff, including multi-disciplined officers and attendants, in developing goals for performance to meet business plan objectives and Animal Control By-law requirements, organizing workflow and scheduling to ensure employees understand their duties and tasks, monitoring employee productivity and providing constructive feedback and coaching.- Planning and organizing the daily operation of the shelter in a functional manner ensuring that the provision of Animal Care and Husbandry is consistent with best practices and the guidelines as established by the Canadian Council on Animal Care.- Co-ordinating and maintaining close working relationships with various municipalities, departments and other agencies, including the Town of Milton, the Burlington Humane Society, local animal rehabilitation providers and Halton Region.- Managing the maintenance and repair of the building, housekeeping requirements and projected costs in accordance with provincial regulations, program policy and established best practices. Assisting in the preparation and control of the shelter operating budget and capital budget.- Working with the Regional Department of Health on animal related health & safety issues, such as West Nile disease. Provides a liaison between the City and the Region.- Writing and issuing applicable infraction notices, Part One tickets and Orders to Comply and follow-up responsibilities.- Advising Animal Service Officers as to appropriateness of legal action and preparation of documents for Provincial Offences Court and any related tribunals. Research and coordinate with the City of Burlington Legal staff for the preparation of evidence for presentation in court and provide that evidence under oath.- Responsible for co‑ordinating and participating in public relations activities such as, shelter tours and presentations at schools. Represent the department at public meetings of community groups, citizens and business associations.- Researching and preparing by-laws, statistics, correspondence and reports as required. Correspond with the general public and members of Council regarding inquiries and section enforcement procedure. Provide oral and written briefings and case updates to senior staff and members of Council.

**Requirements**:
A valid Class G driver’s license is required with an acceptable driver’s abstract (no more than three (3) driving related convictions or an accumulation of no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous three (3) years prior to the date of hire).
