**Description**
Housed within the University of Calgary's Sociology Department, CES: Canadian Ethnic Studies is an academic journal publishing 3 issues per year, focusing on issues related to ethnicity, race, immigration, and religion. The journal was founded in 1969 and is among the leaders in its field. With a largely Canadian audience, the journal receives approximately 125 submissions per year and publishes approximately 25 articles as well as book reviews, interviews, and other material. CES is the official journal of Canadian Ethnic Studies Association. Project MUSE from John Hopkins University Press (JHUP) helps in the distribution of the journal.
This Recurring part-time position reports to the journal's Co-Editors, Dr. Abdie Kazemipur (Department of Sociology) and Dr. Shibao Guo (Werklund School of Education). This position requires continuous interaction with faculty, staff, graduate student assistants, authors, and reviewers. The work averages 10 hours per week on a flexible schedule; much of the work can be done remotely. This position is part of the AUPE Bargaining Unit.
The primary purpose of the position is to assist the co-editors in the adjudication and preparation of articles submitted to CES, including communicating with authors. In addition, the person holding this position will develop initiatives to supplement our conventional publication of articles and reviews.
**Summary of Key Responsibilities** (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Copyediting.
- Communicating with authors and journal editors about revisions.
- Writing rejection, acceptance, and revision letters to contributors.
- Assisting the editors, as required, with assessment of manuscripts and identification of potential external evaluators.
- Ensuring the smooth processing of manuscripts through the editorial system.
- Potentially overseeing publication processes, including delivering materials to the press for publication, distributing proofs to authors, returning corrected proofs to the press, etc.
- Improving existing mechanisms; recommending changes to methods, procedures, and practice.
- Working with our press to develop ways to augment the kind of things we offer to readers via our website, in line with innovative scholarly journals.
- Maintaining effective, productive relationships with journal staff and contributors.
- Managing independent work time effectively.
**Qualifications / Requirements**:
- Bachelor's degree is required; Master's degree or higher preferred.
- At least two years of experience working on a scholarly journal.
- Excellent writing and editing skills, including an expert knowledge of English grammar.
- High proficiency with Microsoft Word including ability to edit or format documents and utilize track changes, etc.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to set priorities, multitask, and meet deadlines.
- The position requires exceptional attention to detail and an ability to concentrate when copyediting.
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team are critical to success.
- A high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
- The ability to use independent judgment and to organize and complete work with mínimal supervision where required.
- The position requires initiative and an ability to carry out projects independently.
