In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
The cumulative effects scientist will work within the Applied Freshwater Ecology Research Unit at the UBC Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries. The scientist will report to Dr. Jordan Rosenfeld but also will interact and liaise with other scientists, programmers, model developers, government biologists, and academic scientists working to develop and implement the cumulative effects modelling framework.
WORK PERFORMED
Core responsibilities of the position include:
Conducting literature reviews and data analyses for developing stressor-response functions
- performs extensive literature reviews of the primary and gray literature
- extracts and analyses data from published papers
- synopsizes stressor-response functions and designs, develops, and updates stressor-response function databases; incorporates stressor-response functions into cumulative effects models
Designs and runs cumulative effects modelling scenarios to provide technical guidance for endangered species recovery
- makes complex decisions around model calibration, parameterization, and appropriate simulation scenarios.
- runs models, debugs and trouble-shoots simulations in collaboration with model programmers, interprets complex simulation outcomes, and drafts relevant sections on data interpretation in scientific manuscripts
Development of manuscripts, manuals, and documentation for cumulative effects modelling
- designs and writes scientific publications focused on providing guidance on optimal methods and statistical approaches for developing stressor-response functions
- develops, writes, edits, and updates Cumulative Effects software user manuals for clarity and content
- designs and updates web sites and other communication tools to support cumulative effects model development and dissemination, and to facilitate user outreach.
Contributes to design, creation, and evaluation of modelling software
- participates in identifying and creating structural design elements of modelling software; influences decisions on which elements to include, modify, or reject.
Organizing training workshops on how to use cumulative effects modelling software
- designs and organizes training workshops for the cumulative effects model; prepares and presents training material at workshops
- synthesizes feedback and advice from multiple participants and stakeholders on the workshop and modelling tool; decides which elements of workshops to retain, improve, or modify.
Proposal writing
- identifies and designs new key model functionalities; identifies appropriate funding sources for model design upgrades, and drafts proposals for model upgrades using new design elements
- submits funding proposals in collaboration with the project manager and team members
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR (DECISION MAKING | LEVEL OF JUDGEMENT)
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The scientist will perform their work independently, but their general activities will be supervised at a higher level by the project lead (Jordan Rosenfeld), who will meet with them at regular weekly intervals for project updates. Most of the supervision will relate to discussion of results and strategies related to model design, data collection, analysis, modelling, interpretation, stressor-response database creation, and report writing, as well as outcomes and assessments of workshops and planning and success of research proposals for ongoing research.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
This position does not involve supervision of staff.
Minimum Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
