**Steel Fabrication Technical Specialist - 12-Month Limited Term**:
Victoria Shipyards is experiencing substantial growth, creating exceptional long-term opportunities for skilled engineers and technologists to join our team. These roles are particularly well suited for individuals wanting to balance design work with hands-on field experience. The Steel Fabrication Technical Specialist evaluates and resolves technical-related production problems encountered in the shop while manufacturing steel and outfit items (e.g. equipment foundations, electrical collars, and structural HVAC ducting). Collaborating with the Engineering Manager, this role supports Operations, Production, Supply Chain, and Planning to tackle manufacturing issues and develops technical solutions while maintaining cost and schedule objectives.

The Steel Fabrication Technical Specialist actively reviews production schedules, engineering specifications, material orders, and related information to maintain current knowledge of manufacturing methods, procedures, and activities in the shipyard. This role may also review and develop design and construction documents for shipbuilding, repair, and conversion of all types of vessels to satisfy customer needs and as required by regulatory bodies and classification societies.

**Note: This is a 12-Month Limited Term opportunity, providing extended health benefits and 3 weeks’ vacation. Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 825 Admirals Road, Victoria B.C.**

**Duties/Accountabilities**
- Provide technical support in assigned manufacturing areas, e.g. fabrication of foundations, electrical collars, and rectangular ducts
- Liaise with Operations, Production, Supply Chain, Engineering, and Planning to resolve production issues in a technically acceptable manner and maintain cost and schedule objectives
- Provide technical support and resolution for problems encountered during and after fabrication
- Review, develop, and process design and production documents per the customer, class society, and regulatory requirements
- Develop a complete understanding of material specifications and bills of material following Seaspan material strategies and customer requirements
- Review and develop shop info, such as bill of materials, part nests, and fabrication details
- Provide support to project and support managers related to the manufacturing activities to achieve cost and schedule performance
- Prepare and issue manufacturing packages from customer-supplied and in-house developed information
- Review production outputs to ensure the fabricated assemblies are per the manufacturing packages
- Prepare mark-up and ‘as built’ record packages

**Education and Experience**
- Diploma or bachelor’s degree in structural, mechanical, naval architecture, marine systems, or related engineering discipline is desired
- AScT, EIT, P.Tech. or P.Eng. designation would be an asset
- Previous shipyard or heavy industry experience are desired
- Experience working with AutoCAD and controlling technical files are required
- Experience working with Classification Society rules (e.g. LR or DNV GL) is desired
- Experience working with a diversely integrated project team would be an asset

**Skills, Knowledge, and Required Competencies**
- Relevant technical knowledge and design skills for the role
- Excellent time management and ability to work well under pressure
- PC proficiency required (working knowledge of MS Office: Excel, Word, Outlook & PowerPoint)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (speaking and listening)
- Proven ability to work independently to develop solutions to technical problems
- Strong organizational skills, including the ability to adapt to a rapidly-changing, dynamic environment, multi-task, and establish priorities
- Ability to produce and communicate clear, precise, detailed written technical specifications, procedures, work instructions, and reports
- Committed to a high standard of safety and environmental stewardship
- Committed to operational efficiency, including ongoing process improvement
- Ability to move in the shipyard between the office, fabrication shop, graving dock, and onboard vessels with such frequency as needed to meet business needs
- Ability to exercise sound judgment to resolve issues and make decisions in a manner consistent with the critical job functions and company policies and procedures
