POSITION: SHELTER COUNSELLOR; PART TIME
REPORTS TO: Shelter Services Manager
**HOURS OF WORK**:
**Part-time**: Regularly scheduled less than 30 hours per week including day, evening, week-end and “awake” overnight shifts.
- **Week 1**_ _- Sunday 3p-11:30p, Friday 3p-11:30p, Saturday 11p-7:30a (overnight)_
- **Week 2**_ _- Wednesday 2:30p-8:30p, Thursday 4p-10p, Saturday 11a-5p_
**Purpose Of The Position**:
- To ensure the safety and security of the shelter and all the residents and staff therein
- To ensure shelter communal living is respectful and supportive for all residents
- To professionally & appropriately respond to calls made to the 24 hour telephone line
- To provide solution-focused counseling and other supports to the women, youth and children residing in the shelter
- Maintaining the shelter in a safe, clean & organized condition
- Be a positive contributor to the Bethesda House team
- Balance “people work, paperwork & housework” in order to appropriately address the multiple components of the shelter counsellor job
- Appropriately co-ordinate shift duties in collaboration with other staff during overlap shifts
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of gender based violence including domestic violence, familial violence, human trafficking, and other forms of violence against women
- Support clients and their children in a compassionate manner appropriate to their specific individual needs and circumstances
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of mental health issues and be comfortable and competent working alone or with others, with clients experiencing mental health challenges
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of addictions and the Harm Reduction model and be competent working alone or with others, with clients experiencing addiction issues
- Understand and use the Brief Solution Focused Counseling modality when supporting clients
- Competently work alone or with others, on shift in often busy conditions with competing priorities
- Competently work alone or with others, with residents who may be challenging or threatening
- Be a positive, professional representative of Bethesda House with external agencies and the public
**Qualifications / Expectations**:
- Minimum, **Post Secondary Degree/Diploma** in a related field that supports **gender based violence**:
- Valid First Aid/CPR
- Up to date Criminal Reference Check
- Understanding and knowledge of trauma informed care
**Job Types**: Part-time, Fixed term contract
