Compensation Range

Job Summary

The Geering Up Community Events, Clubs & Offsite Camps Coordinator is responsible for the programming and day-to-day operations of all Geering Up Community Events, Camps and After-School Clubs. Operating September through June, Geering Up Community Events and Clubs engage thousands of youth and their families. For operations during July and August, the Geering Up camps engage 1300 additional youth.

The Coordinator is responsible for developing and delivering a comprehensive program to engage camps participants, high school students and their families. Under the direction of the School Programs Assistant Manager, the Coordinator will be responsible for planning, curriculum development, implementation, student and volunteer management and evaluating the above programs. The Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that these events are safe, inclusive, and aligned with the values of Geering Up.

Organizational Status

Geering Up UBC Engineering Outreach is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting science, engineering and technology (STEM) to the children and youth of British Columbia through fun, innovative and hands-on experiments and projects. Geering Up also strives to reach all children and youth, regardless of gender, ethnicity, culture, or socio-economic status. Over the past 25 years, we have reached over 150,000 youth. The work of this position directly addresses the Faculty of Applied Science's goal to have 50% female enrollment. Due to the nature of the work, vacations are restricted during the months of May-August. Working hours will be flexible September to June and may include weekend work, in July and August they will be Monday to Friday and will reflect operational hours of summer camps.

The Coordinator will work closely with various departments and organizations internal and external to UBC including:

- High School Teachers and Counsellors;
- The Engineering Student Services team;
- Mentors and guests from the corporate sector;
- UBC bookings and Safety and Risk teams;
- Aligned non-profit organizations from BC and Canada.

Work Performed

Programming:

- Develops and leads strategy to engage high school youth and build year-round programming opportunities
- Develops special initiatives to engage high school youth traditionally under-represented in STEM fields
- Manages the development and implementation of program curriculum for participants Grades 8-12
- Researches and implements best practices for building inclusive STEM learning environments.
- Manages the current High School Volunteer programming with the goal of growing it to include year-round engagement opportunities, and increased retention.
- Oversee 4 offsite summer camps in surrounding communities.

Staff and Volunteer Management
- Responsible for full-cycle recruitment of student staff and volunteers. Identities staffing requirements, schedules and conducts interviews, writes offer letters and manages performance and development of student staff liaising with APSC HR and the Senior Manager, Geering Up & Outreach and administration as needed.
- Plans and delivers required staff and volunteer training
- Supervises all high school programs, Events, Offsite Camps and Clubs staff and volunteers either directly or indirectly, administers evaluations and provides/solicits feedback
- Conducts staff meetings among the High School Instructing Team and the Clubs Instructing Team
- Supervises co-op students related to outreach communications, social media, and website development
- Sets and manages schedules for all staff and volunteers and approves time entry in Workday

Program Administration
- For the purpose of high school programs, camps and community events, oversees registration and procurement, sets and manages the program budget, and ensures space requirements are met by booking appropriate rooms and facilities on and off campus
