Lumentum is seeking to hire a Hermetics Systems Development (Co-op Student) for our Ottawa based team.

What will you do in this role?
We are looking for an enthusiastic student to work in the Lumentum Hermetics R&D group to contribute to the development of our wavelength selective switch (WSS) products. WSS product development is inherently multidisciplinary, involving optics, MEMS, hermetics, micro-optics assembly and electronics. WSS is a cutting-edge technology that is central to Lumentum’s Agile Optical Network product strategy and it is these products which handle a significant portion of the world’s voice and internet traffic.
This is an excellent opportunity to work in a truly multi-disciplinary environment and to learn about the product development process at Lumentum. In this position, students will be engaged in the development and execution of package assembly and sealing processes involving materials science, thermal design and process control considerations. This position also offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of software relating to hermetic process automation, enhanced data collection/storage and examination as well as R&D analysis tools. Students will collaborate with the Hermetics Process Development, Manufacturing Engineering and Mechanical Design teams throughout their work term, giving them a broad overview of the many disciplines involved in the design of our products.
Roles and Expectations:
- Become familiar with Lumentum hermetic sealing processes, automation software architecture and manufacturing data management systems as required;
- Develop and conduct the sealing and assembly processes for WSS packages including material preparation, sealing and seal characterization;
- Design and conduct experiments to investigate the influence of systematic controlled variation of the process factors and ensure process optimization;
- Develop software to handle hermetic process automation as well as the acquisition and storage of process data;
- Provide quick turn automated examination tools to support R&D development;
- Provide regular progress updates and reports.

- Excellent problem solving skills.
- Previous experience and demonstrated ability in designing, conducting and analyzing experiments.
- Experience with interpretation of mechanical part / assembly drawings.
- Experience with software or systems requirements and architecture definition (any domain).
- Familiarity with VB.NET & Python considered a strong asset.
