**Program Overview**

SHYM (Supportive Housing for Young Mothers) is a program of the YWCA Halifax which provides safe, affordable housing and support for single, young mothers (ages 16 to 24) and their children. SHYM also provides programming that helps young moms and their children develop the skills they need to build strong families in a safe, encouraging environment.

The YWCA Halifax is seeking casual program support staff to be available for casual shifts at the SHYM program location in Dartmouth, NS.

**Essential Duties of Position**:

- Provide child minding for the infants and young children
- Provide support, including, but not limited to advocacy, emotional support, crisis interventions, connecting to resources, assisting with parenting and daily living activities to young Moms and their children
- Monitoring the safety of the building
- Assist with programming, including meal preparation
- Data entry and other administrative duties
- Attend quarterly staff meetings
- Cleaning and basic household maintenance duties
- Other duties as directed by the SHYM housing team
- Advance the mission and vision of the YWCA Halifax

**Qualifications**:

- Experience working in a supportive role
- Experience caring for infants and young children
- Strong conflict resolution and problem solving skills
- Experience working with people from diverse cultural, social and economic backgrounds
- Good communication skills: able to negotiate and enforce policies, provide support and encouragement and accurately maintain written logs
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Certification in Non-violent Crisis Intervention, First Aid and CPR, ASIST or willingness to obtain these at the start of employment
- Enthusiasm and affinity for work with young children and their young adult mothers
- Flexible, adaptable, and able to work in an environment that is not always predictable
- Must be able to work from a person centered, trauma informed approach
- Must be able to provide a current Child Abuse Registry and Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable Sector check upon hiring.

**Assets**:

- Bachelor’s degree in psychology, Sociology, Family Studies, Social Work or a diploma in Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth, Social Services from a recognized educational institute or equivalent
- Knowledge of early childhood development and parenting skills
- Knowledge of sexual exploitation and/or experience working with victims/survivors of sexual exploitation
- Training and experience in conflict resolution
- Experience with program delivery
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
