**job purpose**:
The Newcomer Centre’s Community Programs Department delivers holistic and comprehensive programming to promote meaningful community participation and reduce isolation. The current programs in this area include, but are not limited to:

- Empowered Communities (Ethnocultural Community Leader Empowerment)
- EmpowerHER (women’s entrepreneurship support)
- Global Garden
- Global Girls
- IWIN (Immigrant Women’s Integration Network)
- Safe Families for Boys and Men
- S.K.Y Club (Supporting Kids and Youth - academic support and recreational activities)
- Volunteer Services

The Community Programs Department delivers programming through a combination of approaches such as prevention, human-centered design and community driven models. As Community Garden Operations Lead, your core work will be with Global Garden, but we aim to work collaboratively across the department, holistically supporting individuals and their families when possible. This role brings together gardening expertise, relationship building, and program planning and implementation to deliver programming that is empowering, inclusive, and equitable.

The Newcomer Centre’s Global Garden program engages newcomer and Canadian gardeners to work together and learn from each other by growing vegetables, flowers, and fruit on our plot at Edmonton Urban Farm (11312 79 St). Global Garden members work together each garden season to plan, prepare, plant, maintain and harvest a community garden. Global Garden offers opportunities for participants to meet new people, spend time outdoors, share knowledge and learn from others, and enjoy fresh produce.

**key responsibilities**:

- Co-facilitate onsite orientation to Global Garden for gardeners and volunteers
- Train and support gardeners and volunteers on key garden processes, such as planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, and composting
- Work with gardeners and volunteers to identify garden maintenance tasks and needs; carry out garden maintenance tasks as needed
- Monitor watering system and group watering schedule; maintain watering system and fill in gaps in watering schedule as needed
- Build professional, empathetic relationships with gardeners to learn about their unique strengths, interests, and needs, and support their active engagement with Global Garden
- Monitor Global Garden supplies inventory, and work with other Global Garden staff to track and purchase needed supplies
- Develop and maintain professional relationships with Edmonton Urban Farm staff; liaise between gardeners and volunteers and Edmonton Urban Farm when issues occur onsite
- Work with other Global Garden staff to plan and implement end of season activities (final harvest and fall cleanup)
- Document Global Garden activities to support communication among gardeners and volunteers, and inform reporting to funders and other stakeholders

**qualifications/ education and experiences**

The Community Garden Operations Lead preferably has experience with community gardens, community-driven programming, and working with immigrant and refugee communities, including women and seniors. A post-secondary credential in a community-related field, social services, or social science discipline is an asset but not required.

**competencies and skills**:

- Gardening skills and knowledge, including experience with community gardens; experience leading or organizing a community garden is an asset
- Experience “leading from behind” - supporting others to take the lead, while stepping in to provide direction when needed
- Strong communication skills, including strategies for clear and effective communication with English-language learners
- Experience working with diverse community members and colleagues, including building relationships and resolving conflicts
- Self-awareness - understanding oneself and the impact that one’s perceptions and attitudes have on others
- Strong organizational and collaborative problem-solving skills

**additional requirements**:

- This position requires regular weekend work, with core programming taking place on Saturdays.
- A Class 5 driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle are required.
- A Vulnerable Sector Police Information Check and an Intervention Record Check are required.
