Fort Edmonton Management Company (FEMCo), the organization that operates Fort Edmonton Park, is looking for energetic and passionate individuals to join our team as a Wardrobe Stitcher. Fort Edmonton Park takes you on an iconic journey through the city’s incredibly rich history. The Park offers visitors authentic and immersive experiences, as well as access to special events, live performances, private event rentals, and culinary delights. Fort Edmonton Management Company’s strategic direction is aimed at making the Park the premier cultural tourism attraction in Western Canada.

The Fort Edmonton Park Wardrobe team builds and sources a variety of period pieces from historic millinery to footwear and everything in between. These pieces are used to bring our Park to life, help visitors to connect with stories of the past, and educate global guests about what it looked like to live throughout historic eras in Edmonton. This role will report to the Wardrobe Manager and work closely with the other members of the Wardrobe Department, to maintain all historical garments and drive the department success, which includes wardrobe collection, Indigenous regalia, and department-made retail products. The Wardrobe Stitcher will work with the team and volunteers to alter, maintain, and build pieces. The Wardrobe Stitcher may aid in wardrobe collections management tasks including photography, space organization, and inventory management.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

- General Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with costume and product creation;-
- Construct and repair historical garments to prolong their lifespan;-
- Work with a variety of materials, historical patterns, and heritage pieces;-
- Ensure garments and pieces are laundered according to best practices;-
- Work with Indigenous regalia, learning customs, protocol, and requirements for the repair and care of these items;-
- Assist with inventory maintenance; accurately cataloging items, and updating spreadsheets;-
- Assist with transfer of garments from shop to storage or other areas within the Park;-
- Maintain general upkeep of the costumes shop (ex. sweeping and tidying as needed);-
- Ensure proper opening and closing established procedures of the shop are followed;- Other duties as required.
- QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-secondary education or enrollment in Wardrobe/Textiles or Theatre program (diploma or degree) or equivalent experience-
- Work experience equivalent in Sewing/Garment Construction-
- First aid and AED training and other safety certifications an asset-
- Good hand and machine-sewing skills (experience working with period costumes is not essential, but considered an asset)-
- Experience in completing alterations and repairs-
- Experience working in a costume shop or similar environment an asset-
- Some historic dress research skills and experience is an asset-
- Good organizational and time management skills-
- Proven problem-solving skills, adaptive to change-
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with fluency in English-
- Familiarity with Windows and Google Suite software.OTHER DETAILS:
- Primarily an indoor and onsite workshop position, shifts are typically weekdays and between the hours of 8am to 6PM; will require occasional weekend, stat holiday and/or evening work;-
- Alternate or extended shift hours and/or overtime may be required for this position on an occasional basis, primarily during the Park’s operational summer season-
- Must arrange own transportation as the Park often operates outside of regular public transportation hours;-
- This position will be required to work in all weather conditions with frequent walking, standing, using stairs, travelling distances across site and moderate lifting and carrying up to 25lbs;-
- Moderately physically demanding role with a mix of both physical, sedentary and repetitive work with frequent pushing, pulling, crouching and bending when working in the shop;-
- May be exposed to chemicals, smells, elements, noise, temperature etc.;-
- Required to wear appropriate PPE such as closed-toed shoes, masks, gloves, safety vests etc.;-
- Exposure to or in contact with common allergens such as but not limited too hay, straw, fur, pollen, dust, peanuts/nuts, bee/wasp stings while on site;-
- Working in a busy shop environment with frequent interruptions;-
- Ability to attend and conduct meetings, training, and presentations as needed;-
- May be called upon to assist with procedures during an onsite emergency;-
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada for any employer;-
- Media consent form required in accordance with FEMCo policy as this role may participate in media events as required; and-
- Original Police Information Check issued within the past 90 days that is satisfactory to the employer before starting in the position may be required
