Production Superintendent

**THE OPPORTUNITY**
Western Forest Products is hiring for a Production Superintendent to join our Duke Point Sawmill in Nanaimo, BC.
**What You’ll Do**: As a Production Superintendent, you’ll play an important leadership role in the operation overseeing the safe and efficient coordination of our production employees and others on site, while delivering on production volumes in a manner that supports the Company’s safety, sustainability, and financial goals.
**Who You Are**: You are an experienced sawmill supervisor or superintendent with strong leadership skills looking to develop your career and take on new challenges. You are dedicated to sound business practices, continuous improvement and compliance with applicable laws and regulations. You are someone who continually strives to make improvements in safety, efficiency, quality, and profitability in any job you have.
**Work Environment**: This role is to be performed in person at our Duke Point Sawmill in Nanaimo, BC.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**
**Operations**
- Make certain safety, quality, environmental, provincial and federal legislation compliance across all elements of the operation, holding staff and contractors accountable for adhering to Company procedures and operating standards;
- Efficiently manages and coordinates production operations to ensure timely and targeted delivery of production targets as forecasted to maximize margin for the company;
- Provides supervision across all Sawmill Production operations (Sawmill, Packaging, Yard), building quality requirements into each operation;
- Working closely with the Maintenance Superintendent, ensures that all maintenance projects are coordinated to ensure mínimal downtime;
- Work with contractor and Company personnel to drive positive change with respect to operational safety, quality and productivity; and,
- Stay abreast of industry innovations and trends in harvesting knowledge and practices to improve company margins.
**Leadership**
- Provide leadership and direction to improve safety and environmental performance, reduce operational costs, enhance log value, and maximize margins while promoting Westerns core values;
- Assist with the management of the USW relationship and other key relationships and contractual obligations; and,
- Hire, train, coach, mentor and manage the performance of hourly and salaried staff as well as contractors.
**Financial Performance**
- Work closely with the Operations Manager, Maintenance Superintendent, Production Coordinator and Finance to ensure all operational decisions are based on sound financial analytics;
- Support the establishment and ongoing improvement of production metrics;
- Review costs and metrics and utilizes financial data to improve efficiency;
- Oversee inventories, ensuring optimal levels are maintained;
- Make recommendations on capital investment opportunities and oversee project implementation in order to provide greatest return to the company;
**QUALIFICATIONS**
**Education And Experience**
- 8-10 years of experience in Lumber Manufacturing Operations in increasingly responsible roles;
- Thorough knowledge of lumber manufacturing including equipment, processes and products;
- Post-secondary degree Wood Products Processing or equivalent considered an asset;
- Lumber Grading ticket is considered an asset; and,
- Thorough knowledge of and experience with coastal lumber and grading.

- Expert knowledge of the full scope of coastal harvesting activities and all applicable safety and environmental regulations.
- Excellent working knowledge of applicable Forestry legislation, WorkSafe, and Employment Standards regulations applicable to the logging industry;
- Demonstrated strong analytical, problem solving and logical thinking skills;
- Understanding of financial reports, forecasting and budgeting; and,
- Demonstrated continuous improvement mindset.
