Roadway Maintenance Leader I/Maintenance Repairperson I - AUX/SNIC

The role of the Leader I/MR1 in the winter (LD1- Snow and Ice) is to be a working foreman in charge of a crew engaged in performing many differing aspects of the snow and ice program. The incumbent is responsible for the work performed by the members of the crew, ensuring compliance to all methods, procedures with respect to the task being performed.
The role in the summer (MR1 - Auxiliary Structures) is engaged in a variety of small scale construction, maintenance and repair duties, requiring general working knowledge and understanding of carpentry, painting and some familiarity with other basic trade practices.
Your duties will include:
- Direct and supervising staff daily in the field; participates with the Supervisor, in evaluating staff, as well as providing feedback and effective recommendations into the disciplinary process of subordinates
- Provides employee verbal performance management
- Coach and mentoring field staff in a way that creates a culture for growth and development
- Evaluate the current capabilities and productivity of individual crew members and identifying training and development needs
- Promote a safe work environment
- Ensure all staff are trained on all of the tasks and equipment that they are asked to use to perform their work
- Field level monitoring and holding employees accountable for the performance of work performed, providing feedback as required
- Set performance expectations and escalating to Supervisor
- Conduct and attend regular staff meetings, ensuring safety and cultural commitments are addressed, as well as section, work and culture expectations
- Day to day crew leadership in a variety of related duties including but not limited to attendance, time reporting, coaching, and assisting in the management of equipment and tools
- Leads crew to various job sites in relation to predetermined schedules, assesses field conditions upon arrival, directs the setup of equipment and people power and initiates appropriate traffic control and related safety measures as required
- Participates in equipment operations, labouring activities etc, as required
- Ensure appropriate and effective delivery of work, taking into consideration time, quality, cost/budget
- Oversee the training, scheduling and deployment of personnel to accomplish the work in compliance with OH&S Alberta, City OH&S Safety and Health standard, ENVISO program and City Standards Operating Procedures (SOP)
- Render professional advice, opinions, assistance and services to their leader, as required
- Work with the supervisor, to define and carry out the work plan for the area/district
- Use various software programs including, but not limited to: LMS, SDMS, Google Suite, SAP, GPS, ARCGIS etc
- Report the completion of work based on predetermined routes through various tracking methods
- Assigns work tasks to labourers and others, and demonstrates the use of equipment and tools to train individual crew members as required
- Support and assist the supervisor by performing additional tasks including scheduling, First Calls, handling 311 notifications, SAP data entry as required
- Support the supervisor in communicating information and needs to internal stakeholders such as the Training Department, Fleet, equipment vendors, IT, etc
- Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications:
- Grade 12 supplemented by Supervisory experience/Training
- A minimum of 3 years experience with SNIC including operation of all vehicles and associated equipment is required or equivalent
- A minimum of 3 years experience with relevant Auxiliary structures including operation of all vehicles and associated equipment is required or equivalent
- Skid Steer training
- Ground disturbance training
- Demonstrated ability to effectively and efficiently plan, assign, supervise and evaluate the work of subordinates
- Knowledge of heavy equipment operation, maintenance and repair
- Knowledge of the PARS Operating Procedures and SOPs
- Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions related to the maintenance operation
- Conduct work in a manner that complies with the requirements set out in the City's Environmental Management System (EMS)
- Demonstrated supervisory skills and ability
- Demonstrated excellent customer service and communication skills both written and verbal
- Ability to follow work plans for timeliness, quantity, quality, productivity, unit costing and accomplishments
