**Policy Advisor**

The Ontario Fruit & Vegetable Growers’ Association (OFVGA) is seeking an individual to join our staff team in the full-time permanent position as Policy Advisor. This position will support the organization’s development and advocacy of positions on key issues impacting the fruit and vegetable sector.

The Policy Advisor will be a key member of our growing, cohesive team and be expected to work closely and collaboratively with OFVGA staff and board members.

If you are passionate about conducting policy analysis, developing policy recommendations and being part of a dynamic team that regularly interacts with growers, industry associations, government officials and agencies, international governments, schools, community groups and other not-for-profits, you are encouraged to apply.

**Responsibilities and accountabilities**:
**Policy**
- Work with the OFVGA board and staff to develop policy on issues of importance to fruit and vegetable growers in Ontario
- Support OFVGA responses to municipal, provincial and federal policy and regulatory consultations
- Research, collect, analyze and interpret data to provide insight into the economic and other impacts of government policies and regulations on the fruit and vegetable industry
- Establish and maintain strong reputation for quality work, solid thinking and decision making.
- Demonstrate understanding of political and legislative processes with respect to policy at various levels of government
- Use and continue to develop policy analysis, including monitoring trends, industry developments and technological innovation

**Liaison**
- Work closely with OFVGA’s members, provincial commodity partners and other agricultural stakeholders on issues of common interest to support OFVGA policy work
- Develop and maintain constructive relationships with internal and external partners as needed
- Represent the organization at industry events provincially and nationally as well as on committees as needed

**Qualifications**:
**Core competencies**
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong research and data analysis skills
- Self-initiative and ability to work independently as well as part of a cohesive team
- Excellent project management skills to coordinate and prioritize concurrent projects
- Ability to work well under pressure and to deadlines
- Ability to effectively work with people at varying levels including board and senior management
- Strategic thinking, including the ability to quickly identify and understand issues and opportunities.
- Strong presentation and interpersonal skills
- Effective time management skills

**Technical skills**
- Understanding of policy development and legislative processes of various levels of government; knowledge of fruit and vegetable industry in Ontario/Canada and its key issues considered an asset
- Ability to understand and use economic models
- Ability to develop budgets and manage costs against budgets
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Valid passport and driver’s license
- Reliable vehicle access

**Education and experience**
- A degree in agriculture, economics, or a related field
- A minimum of five years of experience in policy analysis, agricultural economics, market research or a related field
- Knowledge of agricultural policies and regulations would be a plus

**Compensation and benefits**
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience; benefit program, matching RRSP contributions
- Based at OFVGA office in Guelph, Ontario, with work from home opportunities
- Monday to Friday, 8:30 - 4:30, with flexibility for some evenings and/or weekends as needed

**Working Conditions**:

- Works in an office environment
- May be required to work outside of normal business hours to attend some weekend/evening meetings
