Your Opportunity:
Assumes the role as casual supporting the sole Child Life Specialist (CLS) at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital (GRH) as applicable coverage needs; Ensures clinical practice is patient/family-centred and maximizes the child's physical and emotional health through activities & interventions that are evidence-based, research-informed & aligned with program/clinic services. As part of the site-wide service delivery, CLS is responsible for assessments/interventions that support children and their families with coping & adjustment in the hospital setting primarily in the pediatric inpatient rehabilitation unit, also serves all pediatric clinics and outpatient services by consult. This individual will have the skills required to utilize knowledge of infant/child/adolescent development, the impact of hospitalization on children, pain management & coping techniques with pediatric patients. The CLS works with children & their families in order to maximize the child's physical and emotional health through activities in the social, cognitive & developmental domains. The CLS works as part of an interdisciplinary team providing therapeutic interventions in response to referrals and within the context of regular program offerings. Assess, research, plan, implement & evaluate appropriate play and developmental activities/interventions for children & families (both individual/group settings). Help prepare children for diagnostic, medical &surgical procedures through hospital play, demonstrations/discussions & introduce coping strategies and techniques to assist children and families during procedures. Provide diversion experiences and facilitate special events.

Description:
As a Child Life Specialist, you will plan, develop, implement, coordinate and evaluate developmental and normalization activities including therapeutic play programs in order to further the social, emotional, intellectual and physical growth of children and adolescents. You will assess, research, plan, implement and evaluate appropriate play and developmental activities/interventions for children and families (both individual and in group settings). You will provide therapeutic play programs designed to reduce stress, help clients cope with hospitalization, promote development and independence. You will help prepare children for diagnostic, medical and surgical procedures through hospital play, demonstrations and discussions and introduce coping strategies and techniques to assist children and families during procedures. You will also provide diversion experiences and facilitate special events.

**Required Qualifications**:
Completion of bachelor's degree in Child Life, Education, Psychology or other related field.

**Additional Required Qualifications**:
Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP) certification (individuals eligible to write their certifying exam within 6 months of the position start date will also be considered). Minimum 3-5 years of experience working as a Child Life Specialist in a tertiary pediatric health care setting. Demonstrated skills in non-pharmacological pain management techniques used to assist children and youth. Demonstrated experience with procedural preparation/supporting children/youth through painful procedures. Experience planning/facilitating therapeutic group programs for children and youth. Demonstrated ability to teach/deliver educational material to families in an engaging/meaningful way and experience prioritizing referrals from multiple program areas/units. Demonstrated ability to function independently and within a multidisciplinary team. Demonstrated understanding of Family Centered Care service delivery model. Due to the nature of a one-person program, experience in role advocating/program development is an asset. Effective communication with a family-centered focus. Demonstrated behaviors consistent with the values of AHS. A high level of physical effort (60-70%) is related to the clinical caseload. Position may be required to maintain a standing/sitting position with lifting, bending, and/or rotation related to client transfers or interventions. An excellent attendance record, reliability and personal suitability must be demonstrated through your employment references.
