**Working for the Department/Faculty**

The Department of Biological Sciences is the largest and one of the most diverse on campus in terms of the research interests of its academic staff. This diversity results in numerous collaborations and innovative approaches within research programs. The breadth in departmental expertise also supports the Department of Biological Sciences in offering more than 130 courses to undergraduate students. Our programs provide students with a foundation of knowledge across biological and related fields. We emphasize experiential learning through substantive offerings of lab courses, independent research opportunities and field courses. The Department currently has 59 professors, 29 adjunct professors and 31 professors emeritus, along with a graduate student population of 224 and 40 departmental support staff that work together towards research and educational excellence.

**Position**

The Biology Technician works as a member of the Department of Biological Sciences' core
- course, laboratory-prep team. This team works out of a common prep area and is composed of Biology Technologists and the Biology Technician. The team is responsible for preparing, setting up and taking down all material related to the laboratory components of the Department of Biological Sciences core courses - Introduction to Cell Biology (Biology 107), Introduction to Biological Diversity (Biology 108), Molecular Genetics and Heredity (Biology 207), and Principles of Ecology (Biology 208) in an effective and efficient manner. All of these courses are large, multi-section courses with a weekly laboratory component. Each week there are 137 lab sections of up to 20 students, a capacity of nearly 5,500 students a year.

**Duties**
- Cleaning and sterilizing glassware for teaching laboratories
- Preparing and assisting in preparation of materials, cultures and solutions
- Assisting with the set-up and takedown of teaching laboratories
- Maintaining and/or disinfecting basic equipment
- Ordering and receiving supplies
- Keeping a safe working environment

**Qualifications**
- Minimum of a high school diploma
- First Aid/CPR course
- WHMIS course and other appropriate lab training
- Experience with techniques used in biology (cell biology, molecular biology, genetic, organismal biology and or ecology) is highly desirable.
- Familiarity working with basic lab equipment (eg. commercial dishwashers, commercial dryers, commercial autoclaves, refrigerators, freezers, incubator, waterbaths, UV lamps and hoods, vortex mixer, etc. is highly desirable
- Must be a capable self-learner
- Must be able to work independently and as a part of a team
- Must have basic computer skills
- Must possess good communication skills
- Must possess good organizational skills and time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks
- Basic, working knowledge of more complex lab equipment (eg. compound microscopes, stereo microscopes, liquid both dispensers, automatic late dispenses, micropipetes, etc.) is an asset
- Experience with living cultures and materials (eg. bacteria cultures, fungal cultures, protest cultures, plant cells insect cultures) in both lab and field settings is an asset
