The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) and Alberta Health Services are committed to working together to develop world-class expertise in Palliative Care Research as it relates to oncology. According to the World Health Organization, “Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families who are facing problems associated with a life-threatening illness. It prevents and relieves suffering through the early identification, correct assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, whether physical, psychosocial or spiritual.” Research in the biomedical, clinical, health systems services and population health domains are all relevant to palliative care.

**Responsibilities of the Chairholder (**include but not limited to):

- Conduct a world-class palliative care research program at the FoMD and in collaboration with related organizations including Alberta Health Services;
- Contribute to mentorship that will promote the development of junior faculty in palliative care research;
- Attract undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty to palliative care research;
- Develop successful interdisciplinary collaborations in palliative cancer research between FoMD, CRINA, University of Alberta and AHS investigators and other palliative cancer researchers at the provincial, national, and international level;
- Successfully compete for external research funding in support of the palliative care research activities;
- Participate in fundraising and promotional activities conducted by the FoMD and Alberta Cancer Foundation, as requested; and
- Acknowledge the Alberta Cancer Foundation Chair in Palliative Care in any publications, public announcements or appearances related to the Chair.

**Qualifications**

An appointee occupying the position of the Chair shall, at a minimum, meet the following requirements:

- Have a medical degree and/or relevant PhD.
- Be a current academic faculty member at the University of Alberta.
- Be an established or emerging scholar acknowledged by their peers as a current or developing leader in palliative care as it relates to oncology.
- Have demonstrated excellence in university-level teaching and dissemination of research.
