The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry is a leading Canadian centre for outstanding education and research. The School is the largest Faculty on campus and employs over 2,000 part time and full time faculty and over 1,000 staff. Researchers in Schulich account for over half of research funding at Western.
The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry’s Research Office aims to enhance the School’s research competitiveness and research capacity, and to foster a culture of research throughout the School.

**Responsibilities**:
The Research Officer provides guidance and support to researchers in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry for proposal development, with the goal of enhancing the success of research proposals and enhancing the School’s research portfolio. The role directly assists researchers with opportunity dissemination, proposal development, and grantsmanship, ensuring that each proposal conforms to Western's and funding agency policies, procedures, and criteria. The Research Officer fosters collaboration among researchers within Western, its local affiliates, and other institutions and coordinates their research efforts to enhance research success and innovation. The role designs processes and implements strategies to support the acquisition of grant funding and provides related expertise to faculty regarding internal and external grant processes. Funding proposals are typically related to Schulich and Western priorities and are directly linked to internal and external strategic funding opportunities, and to major national and international grants programs.

**Qualifications**:

- Education:
- Masters Degree in Biomedical Sciences, Natural Sciences, or Engineering
- PhD preferred
- Experience:
- 5 years’ experience successfully pursuing funding opportunities, including experience preparing and writing research proposals, in an academic research administration environment
- Proven experience in writing successful proposals in a biomedical or medical field with direct involvement with the development of funding proposals to major Canadian government or international programs for support of research preferred
- Experience with development and assessment of research metrics preferred
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- In-depth knowledge of best practices for writing and reviewing grant proposals and for development of proposal budgets and of Canadian peer-review granting systems, processes and procedures
- Knowledge of government programs for support of research, including CIHR, NSERC, CFI, and equivalent programs
- Project management skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously from conception to completion within tightly prescribed timelines
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and adapt to growth and change
- Creative analytical and problem-solving skills and sound professional judgment, especially with regard to addressing issues and to confidential/sensitive matters
- Communication skills to translate information into easily understood terms, summarize information, provide a rationale for action, with an ability to complete detailed analytics and reports
- Strong editing and proofreading abilities with attention to detail
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and database management, with ability to develop and prepare reports, analyses and presentations
- Excellent oral and written communications skills with emphases on requirements for proposal development and presentations
- Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage activities both for self and others effectively
- Influential interpersonal skills that build positive and strong relationships at all levels of the organization and with external agencies
- Professional manner, tact, diplomacy and discretion in dealing with associates and colleagues including faculty and senior management
- In-depth working knowledge of University research administration policies and procedures preferred
