**Shielded Facilities Hot Cells Technician - Onsite**

**Location: Pinawa, Manitoba**

**Schedule: Four (4) - 10 hour days - Monday to Thursday**

**Job Summary**

The Shielded Facilities are a licenced facility that will be used primarily for the opening of legacy waste packages, sorting of recovered legacy waste materials and segregation of legacy materials for proper waste sentencing to the appropriate disposition pathway. Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor, Shielded Facility Cell Technicians are trained and to acquire the knowledge of operating procedures and processes, and to operate any specialized equipment necessary for opening legacy packages, sorting waste, segregating it into appropriate pathways and loading the material into both primary containers and transport packages. He/she may also be required to assist in the general operations of the facility as required to maintain the Facility Authorization of this Class I Nuclear Facility. The facility was originally operated as part of a nuclear research campus and is now being returned to service for the purposes of assisting the Whiteshell Laboratories Closure Project dispositioning legacy materials recovered from the Waste Management Area and other areas of the site.

**Qualifications**

**Education**:

- A diploma from a recognized institute of advanced technology with a specialization in a mechanical discipline or,
- Secondary School Honour Graduation Diploma or its equivalent plus a minimum of three years pertinent experience, or its equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training;
**Experience**:

- One (1) to three (3) years of pertinent technological experience is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of waste characterization techniques is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of nuclear sciences basics is beneficial.
- Experience performing hands-on work that requires a high level of manual dexterity and depth perception, such as working with master-slave manipulators or remote controlled equipment is considered an asset.
- Must be able to complete a manipulator On-the-Job (OJT) training evaluation.
- Must be mechanically inclined and experienced working with hand tools, power tools, measurement devices and process equipment.
- Skill in operating pumps, valves, fans, compressors, hoists, lift trucks, overhead cranes (up to 30-ton capacity), rig slings and lifting tackle is considered an asset.
- Experience and knowledge in the use of computers to produce facility logs, reports, inventory records, commissioning procedures, operating procedures and maintenance procedures.

**Functions and Responsibilities**

**Functions and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following**:

- Using master-slave manipulators, operate in-cell equipment including hand tools, power tools, measurement devices and process equipment.
- Perform radioactive material flask handling and transfer operations and perform routine maintenance on on-site transfer flasks.
- Perform all operations of Hot Cells within the limits imposed by the Facility Authorization, and as defined in other operations documentation.
- Assist in providing technical support for maintenance of all hot cell systems.
- To be responsible for the safe, proper and efficient operation of all in-cell and out-of-cell equipment.
- To be familiar with the appropriate methods and precautions required for the handling of radioactive materials.
- To carry out or assist in the design, construction, repair, testing, evaluation and operational development of specialized waste handling equipment.
- To be cross-trained in several processes competently.
- To prepare records, procedures, memoranda and reports through the use of Personal Computers.
- To perform other related duties appropriate to the assigned level.
- Carrying out other operational duties as required.
