Job Summary
The Associate Curator of Exhibitions is responsible for the curation, development, and implementation of exhibitions in support of the mandate and functions of the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre (IRSHDC). This position plays a vital role in completing existing exhibition projects, as well as initiating new exhibitions, through the interpretation of research, collections, and educational goals into public-facing digital and physical displays.
Acknowledging the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre's commitment to collaborating with residential school Survivors, Indigenous communities and facilitating Indigenous-led access to collections, the Curator focuses on the development of exhibitions that share Indigenous knowledges, acknowledge Indigenous data sovereignty and respectful use of Survivors' testimonies.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Executive Director or designate. Works closely and in collaboration with the Executive Director, Project Manager, collections team, research team, as well as education and engagement staff. This position takes a lead role in engaging with Indigenous communities and partners, interested parties, and other project contractors within the context of exhibition development and implementation.
Work Performed
**Curation and Exhibition Development**:
Works collaboratively with exhibition project teams to lead the development, interpretation, design, writing, and installation of both digital and physical exhibitions;
Works directly with designers, artists, researchers and Indigenous community members to coordinate exhibition development;
Oversees the design and interpretation of day-to-day layouts and displays in the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre gallery space;
Develops integrated long-term plans for the future development of the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre gallery space;
Writes, develops and designs content related to experiences and histories of (but not limited to) residential schools in Canada, Indian hospitals in Canada and/or settler colonialism in Canada;
Collaborates with exhibition project partners to develop exhibition themes and content that is responsive, accessible and respectful to community input and integrates Indigenous storytelling and/or methodologies;
Advises and contributes to the drafting of policies related to exhibitions;
Community Engagement

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Associate Curator of Exhibitions will exercise initiative, sound judgment, and tact in working with faculty, staff and contacts at other institutions. Good judgment in the assessment of narratives and key relationships is imperative, as is attention to detail and organization. Errors, poor judgment, and inappropriate decisions can impede the work of the IRSHDC and result in missed opportunities.
Supervision Received
Significant personal initiative is expected for work performed in this role. Works independently under the broad direction of the Executive Director of the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre (IRSHDC).
Supervision Given
The Associate Curator of Exhibitions may manage, recruit, and train staff, students, volunteers, or contract auxiliary staff and consultants
