Toronto, Canada Student Links Toronto Full time

I am looking for a Volunteer dog groomer to mentor my student 1x a month in this field.

**What is the mentor’s role?**
- Mentors are experts or people in the community who have experience in the area of interest identified by the student. They volunteer their time to provide valuable learning experiences for the student.
- Mentors, in conjunction with families/guardians, students and coordinators, create a plan that includes opportunities to teach the student hard and soft skills, network, explore roles associated with the area of interest, and generally provide opportunities for the student to further their understanding and develop ideas for their future.
- Mentors will propose activities, outings, lessons, and any other ideas to help advance the student’s understanding of the area of interest.
- Mentors maintain open communication with all parties and are encouraged to develop a positive relationship with the student and their family.
- Mentors provide a framework of their availability for meetings, and the time they are willing to commit to the student (i.e., length of mentorship, frequency of visits, etc.).
- Mentors will communicate with the coordinator if they have any questions or concerns and use the coordinator as a resource for ideas.

**What is the duration of the program?**
- The duration varies depending on several factors, but especially on the mentor’s availability. Some mentorships are ongoing, some last several months or weeks and some are for a set number of meetings (i.e., 1 or 3 meetings). The program will not exceed one year.
- A coordinator is available to support a mentorship for up to one year. Beyond that, if the student and mentor choose to continue their connection, they do so outside of the Student Links program.
- Once the student and mentor are well established in their mentorship, the coordinator will act as a resource to the student, family/guardian and mentor if engaged. The expectation is that students, families/guardians, and their networks continue to search for community-minded people who will help the student further their interests in the community. The coordinators can assist in this process by networking, making calls, drop-ins, and asking for and arranging meetings.
- If the student continues to meet with the mentor, the coordinator will provide support to the student, family/guardian, and mentor, but the coordinator does not typically attend the continuation of student-mentor meetings.
- At the end of one year, or when the student and mentor have decided that the mentorship is complete, the program ends. Some students and mentors may choose to continue meeting outside of Student Links involvement.

Student Links is an initiative of Community Living Ontario that **works with high school students with varying intellectual disabilities to assist them in exploring their interests and developing skills to prepare for the future**

**What is Student Links?**

Student Links matches students and mentors so that a student can:
1) Explore an area of interest.

2) Learn more about roles related to an area of interest and possibly develop a community-based role, with the support of a mentor. Coordinators work with students, mentors, and guardians/families to develop plans based on the interest and needs of each student. The goal is to create engaging, informative, and community driven mentorships and connections so that students can develop skills, build relationships and work towards their future.
