Operator, Renewable Energy Centre
Who We Are:
At Northland, we’re enablers of change, united by our journey to transform the energy sector into the foundation for a sustainable future.
Since our inception, we’ve been early movers in the energy industry, adopting new initiatives that pave the way for communities across the globe and helping forge their path towards a carbon-neutral landscape.
We’re a different kind of independent power producer. As developers, owners and operators who are at the forefront of the energy transition, we’re uniquely positioned to leave a lasting impact in the regions where we operate. We’ve expanded our business across Canada, the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia to become a global leader, all by bringing together industry experts to find solutions with an entrepreneurial mindset.
While our work powers communities across the globe, Northland is powered by our people.
What You’ll Do:
As a Control Room Operator, you will be part of the team in Northland’s Renewable Energy Centre (REC) that is responsible for the 24/7, 365 monitoring and control of Northland’s North American renewable operating facilities. You will monitor and remotely control assets, interface with system operators on behalf of generating facilities, and perform troubleshooting and assistance for planned and emergency events under the direction of the Renewable Energy Centre Manager.
This position runs on a rotating 24/7, 365 days a year shift schedule and some travel may be required.
Key Responsibilities
- Real time monitoring and control of wind and solar generating facilities including circuit breakers, transformers, and transmission lines.
- Coordinate with on-site facility operators and system operators to ensure outages, isolation, and work protection is provided for planned and emergency work.
- Monitor weather and system conditions to ensure assets are performing as expected, in real-time.
- Dispatch generating facilities in accordance with dispatch instructions provided by system operator.
- Log, document, and record system operations, events, communications, and alarms.
- Support system troubleshooting including preparing and supporting the development of event reports and root cause analysis.
- Prepare and support routine reports related to facility availability and other key performance indicators.
- Comply with applicable Market Rules, transmitter requirements, and reliability standards.
- Utilize situational awareness to capture revenue opportunities where possible.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives with respect to the processes, procedures, and tools at the Renewable Energy Center.
- Advise management of significant events while complying with polices, practices, and procedures.
- Other duties as necessary.
Who You Are:
- Collaborative: You are committed to our shared success above any individual achievements. You welcome the opportunity to work with and learn from other teams.
- A proactive problem-solver: You have the ability to anticipate and prevent problems before they occur while effectively working with team members and management to resolve complex issues.
- Diligent: Your solid attention to detail will ensure that documented information is accurate.
- A strong communicator: You have exceptional oral and written communication skills and are able to convey your message in a clear and concise manner.
- Independent: You are able to work with a high degree of independency. If you come across a roadblock, you know when to ask for help and feel comfortable doing so.
- Adaptable: You are comfortable adapting to changing priorities and work volume in an exacting environment.
Qualifications and Experience
- Practical, working knowledge of renewable energy technologies (wind, solar, energy storage) and power systems.
- Post-secondary education in one of the following disciplines is considered an asset: Electrical Engineering Technologist diploma; or Instrumentation and Control Technician diploma.
- Familiarity with utility safety regulations and practices.
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Word.
