**Primary function**:
This position is responsible for providing client service under the supervision of the Manager of Criminal Duty Counsel Services. The Legal Aid Worker (LAW) will be responsible for assisting the duty counsel team in implementing various Legal Aid priorities such as the Service Integration Initiative; the Indigenous Strategy, the Racialized Strategy, and the Mental Health Strategy; conducting client and surety interviews; triaging client needs; and referring clients to appropriate services and resources. The LAW will also provide administrative support to the duty counsel office and assist with addressing routine matters in set-date court and video remand court.

**Key accountabilities**:
- Assess client needs in order to refer clients to the appropriate resource(s) and/or service(s);
- Triage client needs appropriately, including early identification of vulnerable clients;
- Conduct in and out-of-custody client intake interviews and conduct surety interviews;
- Preparation of documents including payment agreements, certificates, forms, and general correspondence;
- Address routine client matters in set-date or other courts;
- Liaise with private bar lawyers, Mental Health and other court workers, police and other court stakeholders;
- Required to work in-person and have the ability to work remotely depending on operational needs;
- May be required to work remotely at various courthouses and Legal Aid offices within the jurisdiction; and
- Perform other duties as required.
**Required skills & experience**:
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and interview skills, and sound judgment in dealing with clients, lawyers and other agencies;
- Solid understanding of criminal court processes, rules and practice directions for all levels of court serviced by the Duty Counsel office;
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Criminal Code of Canada, the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Youth Criminal Justice Act;
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft programs (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience with PeopleSoft would be an asset;
- A commitment to social justice or public interest work;
- Fluency in French would be considered an asset; and
