Permanency Support Counsellor

The successful applicant will provide individual and / or family counselling, behavioural support and education to caregivers such as adoptive parents, family members or other individuals raising a child or youth out-of-care, to increase their capacity, resilience and connection with community.
**Service Location / Travel Requirements >**
While this position is based out of Castlegar BC, services are provided primarily in the East Kootenays (extending from Creston to Golden BC).
Extensive travel is required and may result in overnight stays.
**Hours / Schedule >**
Permanent
23 hours per-week
Service hours will be delivered on a flexible basis, and may include evening and weekend hours, and on-call after hours crisis support, to meet the needs of the caregivers referred to the program.
**Responsibilities >**
- Work with caregivers to identify natural supports, improve self-care and resiliency, and to overcome concerns contributing to distress.
- Use a trauma-informed practice lens, and attachment theory to increase the caregiver’s knowledge and understanding of the dynamics with their child / youth in the context of past interaction patterns.
- Improve caregiver and child / youth or sibling interactions and decrease conflict in the home.
- Act as a resource to the community and to families on adoptive and out-of-care support, and child / youth related issues.
- Develop and facilitate support groups for adoptive parents / caregivers to enhance connections, provide education and promote skill development.
- Provide crisis-management and critical incident debriefing to caregivers as required, including after-hours support.
- Facilitate caregiver, child and / or youth connections with relevant community services, and overcome barriers to accessing supports.
- Model and assist caregivers to work collaboratively with members of their child / youth’s care team.
- Implement and maintain required case management and clinical records.
**Qualifications >**
- A bachelor’s degree in a Social Services discipline (BSW, BA-CYC, BA in Psychology or Counselling degree) _and _a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is _required._
- Preferred Types of Related Experience:_
- Experience working in family and alternative family environments.
- Knowledge of / experience in the Extended Family Program and out-of-care kinship placements.
- Child, youth and family counselling.
- Parenting skills training / support programs
- Other Skills and Attributes:_
- Understanding of issues experienced by caregivers and children / youth in out-of-care placements.
- Knowledge of the Family Law Act and the Child Family and Community Services Act.
- Understanding of, and experience working from a trauma-informed, attachment-based practice lens.
- Able to establish trusting relationships with children, youth and families.
- Experience working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Group facilitation skills.
- Mediation and conflict resolution skills.
**Wage / Benefits >**
$26.60-$27.60 per hour based on relevant experience and education.
Upon successful completion of a probationary period, full-time employees (minimum 20-hrs per week) are eligible for a full benefit package (including dental plan, vision coverage, life insurance, extended medical coverage, long-term disability plan, and RRSP contributions).
New full-time employees are eligible for 3-weeks paid vacation to start, as well as paid sick days as described in agency policy.
