This position provides support for data collection and entry for both the Forest Inventory PSP and Registry of Buyers programs. You will aid with the collection of forest metrics for the Forest Inventory PSPs program. The program determines the status, location, and condition of the timber and non-timber resources with additional descriptions based upon the biophysical and ecological conditions of forest lands. This position also supports the Registry of Buyers Program with the field data collection and data entry of silviculture treatments, as well as Registered Buyer annual submission data within the regulatory framework provided by the Registration and Statistical Returns and Forest Sustainability Regulations.

**About Our Opportunity**:
Position responsibilities include:

- Collection of forest metrics such as live and dead tree diameters, heights. Assess land capability and plot ages. Identify woody vegetation species, coarse woody material, tree products, and forest ecosites on a Field Data collecting computer. Precise measurement of the forest metrics includes the uses of field equipment including electronic and manual hypsometers, D-Tape, Increment Bore, Prism, angle gauge, 360-degree camera and survey grade GPS.**The position reports to the Registry of Buyers and Forest Inventory Program Administration Officer.**:

- Work closely with other permanent and seasonal employees to ensure forest inventory sampling methods and specifications along with quality control and quality assurance programs are fully understood, correctly interpreted, and applied to the approximately 650 permanent sample plot that are measured annually.
- Assist in the collection and entry of the Registry of Buyers data from the registered buyers throughout the province as per the Registration and Statistical Returns Regulations.
- Assists in the field collection and data entry of silviculture treatment monitoring within the regulatory framework of the Forest Sustainability Program.

**About You**:
The incumbent must have graduated from a recognized forestry or related technician diploma program.

Other requirements for the position include:

- A general knowledge of the Nova Scotia Forest Inventory PSP Program

A general understanding of the Registry of Buyers and Wood Acquisition Programs

Other Assets would include:

- Current, documented training in First Aid, WHIMIS, ATV operation, Pleasure Operator Card, Canoe use, Radio use, Respect in the workplace, Violence in the workplace, Bear Awareness, Defensive Driving
- Knowledge of Surveying

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
- Nova Scotia FEC certification or a combination of training and experience; and must be able to demonstrate these abilities.
- Ability to identify forest tree and woody vegetation species throughout the year, assessment of ground cover and knowledge of the soil types of Nova Scotia.
- Aerial photography interpretation for the purpose of navigation and general vegetation cover.
- The accurate use of a diameter tape, hypsometer, Garmin GPS, digital camera, use of computer in a Windows OS, stylus driven tablets and communication with a radio.
- Able carrying 35-45-pound backpacks/equipment for long periods of time over various terrain and all-weather conditions.
- Demonstrate good leadership skills and a positive attitude are required, must have a diplomatic approach for working with the general public, registered buyers, landowners and colleagues.
- Be proficient in excel, word, outlook, ArcGIS etc.
- Field navigation skills and be able to demonstrate these abilities.
- A valid NS driver's license (minimum Class 5) and access to a motor vehicle are essential.
