Part Time Youth Justice Worker

The Youth Worker is responsible for the coordination and facilitation of Community Alternatives for Youth Programs focusing on Community Reintegration and Outreach in St Thomas and Elgin County and supporting Extra-judicial Sanctions and Direct Counselling and Youth Justice Conferences in St. Thomas.
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
**Program (25 hours per week)**
- Facilitate, promote, and provide intensive case management support for youth referred to the Community Reintegration and Outreach Programs.
- Support Extrajudicial Sanctions and Direct Counselling Programs.
- facilitate group and or one-to-one Community Alternatives for Youth and Community Learning Hub Programs as referred.
- Process Referrals, Intakes and Completions.
- Support Youth in the Community Reintegration Program (including transportation of young persons as required).
- Coordinate Youth Justice Conferences which include maintaining and recruiting community volunteers to facilitate the Restorative Justice Circles for youth offenders and victims of crime.
- Work as an advocate for Youth with Community agencies including Police Services, Mental Health, Probation, Education, Justice Sector, Housing, etc.
- Act as a mentor and positive role model for Youth.
- Attend Youth Court as required.
- Act as an advocate for Youth and their families
**Volunteers/Student Placements**
- Mentor and support student placements.
- Provide direction, train, support and supervise student placements and ensure that they work together to achieve the purposes of the organization.
- Responsible for preparing student placement roster and files.
- Ensure that all student placements maintain any mandatory training or certification; identify any training needs and report to supervisor.
**Agencies and Community Resources**
- Community development to increase awareness of Community Alternatives for Youth in St. Thomas and Elgin County.
- Weekly contact with Probation and attend Youth Court.
- Work as an advocate for Youth with Community agencies including Police Services, Crown, Mental Health, Probation, Education, Justice Sector, Housing, etc.
**Administration**
- Complete monthly submission of Salvation Army - SAMIS statistics.
- Complete Statistical Reports for the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services
- Prepare for and participate in Salvation Army Accreditation and Divisional Reviews.
- Prepare/submit case notes, court reports, monthly and quarterly statistical forms to the Ministry of Children Community and Social Services and The Salvation Army.
- Process Referrals, Intakes and Completions.
**Health and Safety**:
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Act as the certified JH&S representative for the Stratford Office.
Perform other position related duties as required.
**WORKING CONDITIONS**:
- This is a permanent part-time position based on 25 hours per week.
- Flexibility in scheduling is required.
- Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities.
- Travel is associated with this position; providing transportation for youth will be required on occasion.
- Providing service to St. Thomas and Elgin Counties.
**Normal location of work is**: 410 Sunset Drive, St. Thomas
**QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS**:
- Completed two (2) or more years of Community College, i.e. Youth Worker Diploma, Social Services Diploma or equivalent diploma is required.
- An Undergraduate Degree in Social Services preferred.
- Valid First Aid/CPR Certification.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, personal vehicle required with $2 million in liability insurance, current copy of driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
**EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE**:
- Minimum of two (2) year of prior related experience, preference in community programs working with adult and youth at risk.
- Working knowledge of the area and community resources of Perth and Huron Counties.
- Knowledge and experience in restorative justice practices.
**SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES**:
- Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Self-motivated/disciplined.
- Lead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change.
- Ability to administer and supervise program, work independently with mínimal supervision.
- Ability to work with other community and government criminal/justice services.
- Demonstrate a high level of integrity, good judgment, and ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
