**Function/Purpose**:
The **Environmental Utilities Labourer** performs various labouring duties in the Class IV Water Distribution, Wastewater Collection and Stormwater Collection utilities. Operates tools and small to medium motorized construction equipment and vehicles.

**Job Requirements**:
**Education & Experience**
- Grade 12 or equivalent.
- One year experience in underground deep utility construction of water and wastewater systems preferred.

**Certification & Courses**
- Level 1 Alberta Provincial Certification in Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection preferred.
- Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Must pass and maintain Hazard Assessment, Supervisory Ground Disturbance, WHMIS, First Aid, H2S, Confined Space and Rescue, Driver Training and other courses as determined by the City or Provincial requirements.
- Ability to achieve 7.2 (approximately 72 hours) continuing educations credits per three-year cycle.
- Valid Class 3 Driver’s License with Q Endorsement.

**Required Skills**:

- Demonstrated safety skills in the use of specialized equipment including, but not limited to, respirators and supplied air, air quality monitors, and confined space entry equipment.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and the ability to use a wide range of construction tools and portable water testing equipment.
- Ability to safely operate assigned equipment with a high level of skill in an urban environment, often with limited operating space and significant underground and overhead utilities, while near people, traffic and site obstructions.
- Able to read and interpret utility plans.
- Ability to work unsupervised and cooperate with colleagues as a team and to follow and understand written and verbal instructions.

**Specific Demands of the Job**:

- Knowledge of operating characteristics, functions and capabilities of all available tools and equipment, and its required inspection and maintenance.
- This position requires ability to take part in on-call rotation (investigate water leaks, assess and initiate corrective and emergency action, respond to and investigate customer service inquiries and water quality complaints, water connects and disconnects, wastewater back-ups, and make sites safe, etc.). Respond to after hour emergencies and work extended shifts.
Errors could require minor expenditures to correct, result in a loss of customer confidence and damage the public image of the City.
- Must be physically fit to exert heavy physical effort consistently throughout each day lifting and carrying heavy appurtenances, shovelling, bend and twist in awkward positions, opening and closing valves, climbing ladders, and working at heights with considerable standing, bending and walking.
- Awareness of Design Guidelines, Contract Specifications.
- Hepatitis A and B inoculation is recommended prior to employment
- PPE includes, CSA approved footwear, coveralls, gloves, CSA approved glasses, CSA approved hardhat, CSA approved single and/or double hearing protection, harnesses, face shields, breathing masks and supplied air, confined space entry equipment, etc.

**Remuneration**:$31.14 to $ 32.78 per hour

**Hours of Work**:80 hours biweekly; Monday to Friday as scheduled. Some emergency and scheduled evening and weekend work may be required. On-call rotation is a requirement.
