**Botanical Gardens Grounds Technician**

Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor of the Botanical Gardens, and within established policies and procedures, while operating as part of the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens and School of Horticulture’s Instructional team, the primary responsibilities of the position include overseeing repairs and maintenance of equipment and tools while tracking daily operations and safety procedures including maintaining associate record keeping in compliance with both occupation and health and safety legislation and Niagara Park’s health and safety policies. The Botanical Gardens Grounds Technician is also responsible for all equipment and tool facilities as well as constructions projects and minor repairs on grounds and buildings. Other responsibilities include the delivery of approved curriculum in the areas of Landscape construction, landscape surveying, including both large and small equipment operation, use and safety. Administer assessment and evaluation methods to track and reflect student progress in in an academic and experiential learning environment, while addressing accommodated learning styles of students. In conjunction with the Assistant Superintendent, aides in development of content for select courses and workshops.

**Niagara Parks offers a salary of $27.21 per hour to $33.45 per hour for this position as well as a comprehensive benefit plan and defined benefit pension plan.**

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Completion of a Diploma or equivalent Certificates of one or more related Construction Trade apprenticeship (e.g. Horticulture Technician, General Carpenter and/or Brick and Stone Mason).
- Must hold a valid Class “G” Driver’s License.
- Post-Secondary instruction experience and certification as an equipment trainer, having specifically a thorough knowledge of landscaping machinery and equipment considered a strong asset.
- A minimum of four (4) years of demonstrated experiences in landscape construction; including management and instruction.
- Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of students; good communication and interpersonal skills; ability to deal with the public using tact and courtesy; record keeping skills. Ability to work independently.
- Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position and strong mechanical aptitude and experience.
- Ability to demonstrate and to evaluate the work activities of students.
- Knowledge and experience with an extensive range of horticultural equipment, tools, tractors, mowers and associated implements
- Extensive knowledge of industrial and horticultural safety practices and the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations.
- Must be able and willing to physically work in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions during all seasons.
- Must be willing and able to work overtime on short notice and to perform shift work and standby as required and scheduled to fulfill the requirements of a seven-day operation.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
**Key Activities**
- Utilize technical skills and knowledge to complete projects, including minor repairs and routine maintenance of Botanical Gardens site.
- Manage tool and equipment inventory, maintenance and organization including all tool lockers and equipment facilities.
- Track daily operation and safety procedures, maintain accurate record-keeping in compliance with occupational health and safety legislation and Niagara Parks polices.
- Coordinate equipment maintenance and repair with Niagara Parks Central Garage.
- Evaluate apprentices’ practical skills as they work on projects within the Botanical Gardens site.

**Instructional Responsibilities**:

- Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of the School deliver approved curriculum in Landscape Construction and Landscape Surveying, in alignment with the School of Horticulture’s mandate.
- Administer assessments and evaluations to monitor student progress in both academic and experiential learning strategies.
- Contribute to the development of content for select course within the School of Horticulture.
- Within approved curriculum, instructs, assesses, and evaluates student’s skills and techniques with materials, tools and associated equipment in the Landscape Construction Course, Equipment Maintenance Workshop(s), Equipment Operation and Safety Training and Loader Training for Instructional Staff and Students as required. Oversees tractor operation licensing, associated testing, and records.
- Provides yearly equipment training, evaluations, and final sign off as required to NPC staff and students which includes both classroom practical and teaching activities. In coordination with Health, Safety & Compliance, maintains accurate records, ensuring training is constantly updated and compliant with industry standards.
